Besides for the big events of Comic-Con and rAge, South Africans actually have loads of more niche fan festivals to attend, especially now that pandemic restrictions have lifted. This past Saturday, 5 November, marked the return of Discworld Day, a fan celebration of all things relating to the beloved fantasy universe created by the late great author Terry Pratchett. As with Johannesburg’s previous three Discworld Days, this fourth event was organised by Alter Egos, and took place at Rusty Hooks in Honeydew.

It was the first time I’ve attended one of Alter Egos’ “alternative experiences” and it was a fantastic choice as an initial outing. Witches, Wizards and Feegles galore descended on Rusty Hook for a day of entertainment and exploration of the “streets” of Ankh-Morpork. Among the highlights of things to do and see, you could ride Death’s horse Binky, battle the Nac Mac Feegles, or sing along with Nanny Ogg performing The Hedgehog Song at the Mended Drum.

Discworld Day was a great meeting place of the purveyors of all things geeky, usually tucked away in an artists alley somewhere at the bigger conventions. From the many food vendors, you could stop by Harga’s House of Ribs, grab a pint of Ridcully’s Revenge or, if you were brave enough, a thimble-full of Nanny Ogg’s Lancre Scumble – made from apples (mostly).

Overall, it was like attending a quirky renaissance faire, with a lot of distinct Pratchett flavour. Other attractions on the Saturday included a Discworld quiz, an Of Gods and Guilds Quest with various activities to tick off on your task sheet, screenings of Discworld adaptations, and special on the day deals on Pratchett’s books.

Even if they weren’t participating in the Discworld Day Dress-Up competition (where entrants showed some impressive commitment to character), plenty of attendees came out in costume, be it subtle nods to the lore or a full handmade cosplay, which we always love to see. Whether you were a Kevin or a Roundworlder, there was a whole community of lovely, passionate people ready to welcome you to the Disc. And it was especially heartwarming to see how much of an all-ages experience the day was, with little kids alongside silver-haired geeky types.

A big thank you to Alter Ego events for organising this wonderful day out, and Rusty Hook for hosting.
