While there are no new movie releases this week, series fans still have plenty to keep them entertained with the return of Slow Horses, anthology series Monster tackling the Lizzie Borden story, and the premiere of Reacher spinoff Neagley.

The fourth season finale of Reacher hits screens this coming Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave that world. Neagley is the first spinoff of Prime Video’s adaptation of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, this time focusing on titular character Francis Neagley (Maria Sten). A frequent and important side character in the first three seasons of Reacher, Neagley is Jack Reacher’s former protege when they served together in 110th Special Investigations Unit. Having pivoted to a career as a private detective in Chicago now, the relentless ex-MP finds herself having to seek justice when she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident. Using the skills she learned under Reacher’s tutelage – as well as a few new tricks she’s picked up – Neagley is hell bent to uncover the truth, even if it means putting herself in the crosshairs of a menacing evil.
City of Blood S1

This year saw record high temperatures across Europe, so a near future where climate change has resulting in scorching heat has driven the elite few to live in climate-controlled domes while everybody else has to scrabble to survive under the blazing sun is not that far-fetched. Things get a lot more fantastical – and violent – when vampires are added to the mix though! Set in Berlin, a city-state on the brink of collapse, eight-episode German miniseries City of Blood follows Bea and Phoebe, sisters who were separated as children by a twist of fate, growing up very differently – one in luxury, the other in squalor. When their worlds collide again on the eve of pivotal elections, they uncover a terrifying truth: Vampires control organized crime and are determined to seize political power. Blood has become the city’s true currency. Caught between rival forces, Bea and Phoebe must confront the ultimate question: Who poses the greater threat — humans or vampires?
Slow Horses S6

There’s a lot that other shows can learn from Slow Horses. And no, I’m not talking about how Apple’s adaptations of Mick Herron’s spy novels have consistently been delivering darkly humorous espionage thrills for five seasons without so much a dip down in the quality needle. No, what other shows need to learn is how to just to make five seasons as the Gary Oldman-led series has been pumping out at least a season a year while filming a season ahead. Season six hits screens next week, but season seven is already filming while season eight has already been greenlit. That’s how you ensure your fanbase stays hooked. That and telling brilliant stories. The latest finds all spies of Slough House – both present and past – being targeted by killers, forcing the disgustingly effective Jackson Lamb (Oldman) to round up all the “Slow Horses” that’s ever worked for him, even the few lucky ones who actually made it out before. And even one that is not supposed to be alive! (Also, side bar: If you’ve never watched the show, it might be a good time to start now to familiarize yourself with the work of co-lead Jack Lowden as he is being heavily rumoured to be in contention as the next James Bond)
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Emmy-winning Monster anthology series is back with another dramatic “true story” of an infamous killer. Having previously focuses on Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers, and Ed Gein, the latest iteration pivots to put its first female “monster” in the spotlight. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story dives deep on one of America’s most well-known tales of violent murder, focusing on Lizzie Borden (Ella Beaty), a young woman who was tried and acquitted of the axe murders of her father and stepmother in Massachusetts in 1892. Just what actually happened to Andrew and Abby Borden, and if Lizzie truly was the one that wielded the bloody hatchet, what drove her to such violence? Vicky Krieps, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden, Charlie Hunnam, and Sarah Paulson co-star.
Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 S2

The first season of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 definitely didn’t turn the streaming world… upside down. The animated spinoff set between the third and fourth seasons of Stranger Things came and went without much fanfare despite the original show’s pop culture phenomenon status. It was so quiet that I didn’t even know a second season was on the cards until I saw Netflix’s release schedule for next week. This new adventure – somehow still set in a clearly very eventful 1985 that the characters somehow never mentioned before – finds the gang having to uncover the truth behind ghostly apparitions and a swarm of strange creatures causing chaos around town.
