It feels like we’re spoiled for choice lately when it comes to samurai games, with titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Onimusha: Way of the Sword offering a sharp power fantasy to master. Ghost of Yotei didn’t disappoint on that front either with its stylish tale of revenge, and, a year later, it’s back with a “Complete Edition” that bundles in various improvements and new content. It’s the best version for newcomers to check out, and the recent additions make a compelling reason to return if you’ve already played the game.
So what sets Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition apart from the version that launched in 2025? Like its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei has received a story expansion that further fleshes out Atsu’s vengeance-fueled quest. Playable after you’ve beaten the Snake, Kitsune, and Oni bosses, Ghosts of Sekigahara slots itself into the main story by taking Atsu to the new region of Ashoro Foothills as she deals with the consequences of her past (and brutal actions).

A familiar face from her past resurfaces, and with the Snake dead, the gang under his control, the Vipers, are locked in a power struggle to determine their new leader. In a change of pace, the Vipers have very little nuance compared to the rest of the Yotei Six, as previously each target on Atsu’s kill-list turned out to be a complex individual, pushing the game into morally grey territory. But in Ghosts of Sekigahara, Atsu confronts true monsters: a gang of morally bankrupt murderers, mad dogs without a leash, a blight on the landscape, and drunk with power.
It makes for a satisfying chapter, a breath of fresh air before the more nuanced storytelling takes over again. Here, Atsu battles the lowlifes across the breathtaking scenery of a new region, quickly decorating it with an ocean of blood. The expansion also unlocks a new heavy weapon category for Atsu to master, fragile tools of destruction that break after a few swings but can still dish out a ton of unblockable damage on anyone she targets.

The other big addition in the Complete Edition is Most Wanted, a brand-new combat survival mode with roguelite flavour in which you’re challenged to fight off waves of new enemies and deadly bosses. At the same time, you’ll unlock new weapons, cosmetics, and even new playable characters, including everyone’s favorite conflicted samurai-ninja, Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai. Like The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, this is a standalone mode, and each successful run tunes the difficulty up another notch to test your mettle and buildcrafting skills, letting you unlock new cosmetic gear. If all you truly care about is combat—something that Ghost of Yotei truly excels at—Most Wanted can easily soak up plenty of hours as you hone your skills.
On top of that, Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition also includes new photo mode stamps, additional cosmetics for New Game Plus, and new Trophies for both Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted. It’s also worth noting that the game (both the base version and Complete Edition) is one of two titles updated with Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). Similar to the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), this is a new performance tier of AI upscaling. The game is a proper show-off title if you have a PS5 Pro console and an OLED TV, but QSSR does a damn fine job of making it look almost as good on base PS5 consoles with sharpened graphics and strong performance to match the visuals.

Throw in a year’s worth of updates, the free multiplayer mode that debuted a few months after Ghost of Yotei launched, and new quality-of-life features, and Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition isn’t just the best version of an already terrific game; it’s the definitive version.
Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition released on 1 October as a PS5 exclusive.
