It’s a little discombobulating that the Primetime Emmy Awards haven’t already taken place. More often than not the ceremony falls on a Sunday evening in Los Angeles, but this year it’s Monday. So look out for the results tomorrow morning in South Africa. For the record, the full list of nominees is here, and early predictions are that intense medical drama The Pitt Season 2 and Apple TV’s genre-blending Widow’s Bay will be the big winners.

With that out the way, let’s look at an otherwise pretty quiet week in pop culture news.

Film

Our top new trailer for the week is the teaser for supernatural romance mystery Remain. Born of an unlikely collaboration between “king of twists” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks, the film’s plot is as follows.

When reclusive architect Tate Gordon (Jake Gyllenhaal) moves to small coastal town to complete his latest project, he encounters an alluring young woman, Wren (Phoebe Dynevor) who pulls him out of his shell, and into the centre of a mystery that hangs over the town. Swiftly, Tate learns that nothing is what it seems, and some things are fate.

Remain arrives in cinemas on Valentine’s Day 2027.

Series

Generally we try not to post trailer after trailer for entertainment coming our way. Too much, and you spoil the movie or TV show for yourself. However, this new preview for animated series Avatar: Seven Havens is worth highlighting because it provides a much better sense of story and tone than the previous teaser – along with reassurance for Avatar fans that this is a worthy franchise entry.

From The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Seven Havens is set in a world devastated by a cataclysm blamed on Avatar Korra. Against this harsh backdrop, a young Earthbender named Pavi discovers she’s the new Avatar, causing her to be hunted by both humans and spirits. Still, an Avatar’s work is never done. Reunited with her long-lost twin, Nisha, and with other allies, Pavi must save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.

Avatar: Seven Havens premieres on 9 October on Paramount+. Season 1 consists of 13 episodes, with S2 already in the works.

Forget 31 October. The whole of October is spooky month, and Netflix is getting in the creepiness early with limited series Below, which arrives on 8 October.

Josh Hartnett heads up the cast of this thriller, in which a remote Newfoundland fishing village is terrorised by a mysterious creature after a strange iceberg drifts into the bay. Also starring are Mackenzie Davis, Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton and Natasha Henstridge.

Gaming

BlizzCon, the convention dedicated to Blizzard Entertainment’s beloved franchises (like Warcraft, StarCraft, Overwatch and Diablo), happened this past weekend, and the event produced a number of notable announcements. You can read the full rundown from the Opening Ceremony here, but in terms of what stood out for us, the top three stories are:

  • A Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix.
  • Still on matters of Diablo, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, a new game is already on the horizon. Look out for Diablo V in 2029. The game is set against an even darker backdrop, where the titular Prime Evil rules Sanctuary.
  • It’s been almost a decade since the last StarCraft game (a remaster of the original) released. Well, in 2030, the real-time strategy game is back with an open-world (reportedly single-player) shooter set in the same sci-fi universe. You’ll be playing as a human member of the Dominion military.
