
It’s a long weekend in South Africa, and if you’re planning some downtime on the couch for the next few days, you probably want to check out what’s new on Disney+. As a reminder, high-style sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 joined the streamer at the end of July, and before we get to our top picks for August, know that you can already watch the first two episodes of Futurama (Season 14), while musical movie Camp Rock 3 arrives on Friday, 14 August.

Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi (Animated Series)
Put aside any Star Wars fatigue you may have, because new anime series Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is a breath of fresh air, while still finding space for beloved franchise staples. Ghost in the Shell makers Production I.G continue the story of fledgling jedi Lah Kara that they previously started in two Star Wars: Visions shorts. Watch it in original Japanese with subtitles, or an impressive English dub.
All eight episodes of Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi are streaming now, having dropped on Wednesday, 5 August.
FX’s The Shards (Series)
Ryan Murphy is just not slowing down. Following The Beauty and All’s Fair, all in the space of one year, the prolific producer and writer is back with The Shards, co-created with Bret Easton Ellis, and based on the latter’s semi-autobiographical novel. Set against the backdrop of early 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the threat of a serial killer in their midst.
The Shards premiered on Thursday 6 August with two episodes. The show’s first season will consist of nine episodes.
Lion (Documentary Series)
Releasing under the National Geographic banner is Lion, a wildlife documentary series four years in the making. The Lion King’s Jon Favreau and BBC Studios executive producer Mike Gunton have joined forces for this coming of age story of a lion cub named Kio on his epic, challenge-filled journey to become king. The series combines cinematic storytelling with cutting-edge natural history filmmaking.
All four episodes of Lion are available on Disney+ from Thursday, 20 August.
