The Boys are back in town! Again! The gory comic book TV series is back for a third season as it headlines new streaming releases this week. It is most definitely not the only option though – and not even the only superhero story – thanks to Ms. Marvel hitting Disney+ next week as well. All that plus a stack of new releases, including Adam Sandler’s new movie, Courtney Cox’s new TV series, an Elsa Pataky-led bit of skop, skiet, en donner, and more!

SERIES

Station Eleven S1

Showmax – 1 June 2022

Picking up the Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series as well as the Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series for lead Mackenzie Davis at the 2022 Critics Choice Super Awards, Station Eleven is an extremely timeous production as it tells the tale of how the scattered survivors of a catastrophic global pandemic try to rebuild society.

Shining Vale S1

Showmax – 1 June 2022

Boasting a killer primary cast consisting of Courtney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, and Sherilyn Fenn, Shining Vale is a haunted house horror-comedy described as “a descent into madness, gaslighting, sex, drugs, Christianity, and Courtney Cox.” Sounds like an interesting time to me!

The Boys S3

Amazon Prime Video – 3 June 2022

Billy Butcher and the rest the gang are back and things look to be getting even more diabolical than ever before! And it looks like Homelander will have some stiff competition when it comes to messed up “superheroes” thanks to the debut of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy.

Physical S2

AppleTV+ – 3 June 2022

I must admit that while I liked the first season of Physical, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Rose Byrne is still superb and the premise is still great, but AppleTV+’s comedy-drama series worked better when it focused on the comedy rather than the drama bits, but it was the latter that took up most of the screen time. Lets see if season two can strike a better balance.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

Netflix – 8 June 2022

If you’ve recently seen the tabloid headlines featuring Warren Jeffs, the polygamous preside of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and wondered what the fuss was about, this documentary limited-series digs into the sordid and scandalous truth that led to Mormon sect leader serving a life sentence in prison.

Ms. Marvel

Disney+ – 8 June 2022

Welcome to the MCU, Kamala Khan! Fan-favourite superhero Ms. Marvel will be blasting onto screens next week in a historic series featuring the first Muslim superhero to headline a Marvel title. Early buzz has been really good for this six-episode show with lots of praise aimed at titular young star Iman Vellani. There are some big differences from the much-beloved comic (specifically Ms. Marvel’s powers completely changed), but the hype is still real.

MOVIES

Interceptor

Netflix – 3 June 2022

Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat this: Interceptor looks about cheesy/B-grade as you can get. But hey, sometimes a cheesy B-grade action movie is exactly what you want on a Friday night. Grab some snacks and a drink, switch off your brain, and watch Elsa Pataky kick ass, deliver one-liners, and probably walk away from explosions in slow-motion.

Good Life

Netflix – 3 June 2022

Exactly three years ago today, my wife and I were busy having having an incredible time on holiday in Greece. Much to my now homebound-due-to-the-pandemic dismay, the likes of Google and Facebook kept reminding me of this fact for the entire week. Sigh. And just when I thought I was safe, along comes Netflix with Good Life, a new local film about a South African who visits Greece where she discovers her joy for life. Okay so maybe things aren’t quite the same as our holiday experience as she flees the Mother City due to a broken heart, but damn it I didn’t need another reminder!

Hollywood Stargirl

Disney+ – 3 June 2022

I have to admit that I had never even heard about Stargirl, but seeing as Disney+ is now available locally, you’re can easily catch up with the very well-reviewed 2020 romantic drama before checking out this new sequel. This followup picks up with Grace VanderWaal’s free-spirited songbird Susan “Stargirl” Caraway as she and her mother relocate to Los Angeles with dreams of fame and success.

Hustle

Netflix – 8 June 2022

I know he has his fans, but I generally despise Adam Sandler movies. Actually, let me correct that: I despise Adam Sandler comedy movies. Despite acquiring his fame through his comedic work, I believe he is at his best when his projects skew to the dramatic side of things. And that is why – not to mention me being an ex-basketball player who once had dreams of greatness – I’m looking forward to Hustle.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

AppleTV – 1 June 2022

The latest chapter in the Wizarding World franchise ended up being a bit of a muggle at the box office recently. Whether you blame that lack of magic on controversy surrounding Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, more controversy with actor Ezra Miller, the incendiary firing of Johnny Depp from the role of Gellert Grindelwald, or just general audience apathy towards the franchise, the point is that not as many people watched this movie in cinemas as its predecessors. Were you one of those that didn’t bother with the trip outside? Well, now you can actually catch it in the comfort of your home as The Secrets of Dumbledore is available for rental in 4K on AppleTV.
