SERIES
The Bear S5
26 June 2026 – Disney+
It’s time for the final course! Over the course of four seasons, as it racked up an incredible awards tally of 21 Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes, The Bear has provided with some incredible character drama, but all good things must come to an end. The fifth and final season of the acclaimed show picks up very closely after the tension-filled fourth season left off. It’s the morning after Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Natalie “Sugar” (Abby Elliott) discovered that Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) has quit the food industry, leaving the restaurant to them. And heading their way is a perfect storm of trouble with no head chef, no money, the threat of a sale… and oh, an actual storm, forcing everybody to pull together like never before to achieve one last service, hoping they’ll finally earn a Michelin star.
The Doomies S1
26 June 2026 – Disney+
There’s been practically little to buzz around Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, but I’m sure some of you have watched it. And if you did and you’re now looking for something else to scratch that “animated horror adventure with kids” itch, then The Doomies may just be what you’re looking for. Billed as a spiritual successor to fan-favourite Gravity Falls, The Doomies is set in the sleepy coastal town of Ouimper and follows Bobby and Romy, best friends who are desperate for anything interesting to happen. Unfortunately for them, they get their wish when they stumble across a magical rune and accidentally open a portal to evil, transforming their quiet seaside community into a magnet for monsters and supernatural chaos.
Notes from the Last Row S1
26 June 2026 – Netflix
Based on the popular Spanish play “El Chico de la última fila,” Notes from Last Row is a suspenseful new South Korean drama from acclaimed director Kim Gyu-tae (The Trunk), veteran actor Choi Min-sik (Old Boy) and rapidly rising superstar Choi Hyun-wook (Weak Hero Class 1). The show centres around Heo Mun-oh, a grumpy literature professor and failed writer who becomes enamored by the talent of Lee Kang, a mysterious student who always sits in the back row of his literature class. Sensing Lee’s potential, Heo offers him writing lessons, but as he sinks into the story Lee’s creating, their sessions spiral into chaos.
X-Men ’97 S2
1 July 2026 – Disney+
To me, my X-Men fans! The first season of Marvel’s revival of the classic X-Men: The Animated series was an absolute blockbuster of a series, and we’ve been champing at the bit ever since for more. There had been some trepidation due to some juicy behind-the-scenes drama that saw original showrunner Beau de Mayo ousted from his seat – though the team had already scripted out season two by then – but it seems all those worries are for nought. Early reviews of the new season have been stellar, with many claiming that it’s even better than its predecessor. We got early access to the first four episodes as well, so you can expect a review up soon, but spoiler alert: We loved it! The new season finds the heroic mutant team of X-Men divided and thrown across different eras in time, struggling to return home, all while the threat of Apocalypse looms over all. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.
Human Vapor S1
2 July 2026 – Netflix
Toho, the legendary Japanese studio behind the Godzilla franchise, is teaming up with Netflix for the first time ever to reboot a cult classic Toho title with some modern sensibilities. Released back in 1960, The Human Vapor was directed by iconic filmmaker Ishirō Honda, six years after he changed movies forever by writing and directing the original Godzilla. The Human Vapor was a big departure from the kaiju disaster movie as it followed a man transformed into a gaseous being by a science experiment gone wrong, who uses his newfound gifts as an antihero, while being chased by a dogged detective for robbing banks (because even an immaterial man still has material needs). The movie was a critical smash, even achieving very-rare-for-the-time international success in the United States and Europe, with extra special acclaimed leveled at the film’s groundbreaking VFX work. And now for the series reboot, Netflix and Toho are hoping to replicate those successes as they got the Oscar-winning visual effects team behind modern masterpiece Godzilla Minus One to work on the show. This new series also reimagines the classic film’s plot as a much darker story and switching up the POV to follow Kenji Okamoto (Shun Oguri), a detective on suspension, who is recruited to hunt down the criminal behind a series of unprecedented murders. When a college professor suddenly swells and explodes on live television, responsibility for the bizarre murder is claimed by a man calling himself the Human Vapor and who claims he will perform a series of murders, sending society into a great panic.
MOVIES
The Sheep Detectives
25 June 2026 – Prime Video
If you like your murder-mystery with an ovine twist, then… well, actually that particular sub-genre might be a first, but we still got you covered! Based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, The Sheep Detectives is a mystery comedy film directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin – Yes, the same Craig Mazin who gave us Chernobyl and The Last of Us! Hugh Jackman stars as George Hardy, a shepherd who loves nothing more than curling up with a good detective novel, which he reads aloud to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the very detectives they’ve always been hearing about, following the clues and investigating human suspects, even if it causes unexpected mayhem! Besides for Jackman and a cast of actors including Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, and Hong Chau, the sheep cast features the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein.
Little Brother
26 June 2026 – Netflix
Thanks to his incredible work with Reach for a Dream and just being a great all-round role model, I’m sure many people would love having John Cena as an older brother. But what if Cena wasn’t actually such a great big brother, and had an unhinged little brother to boot? That’s kind of the premise of new comedy Little Brother, which sees Cena star as Rudd, a man that seems to have the perfect life – great job, loving family, and a thriving career as a real estate agent. But all of that is thrown into chaos, when Marcus (Eric Andre), the “little brother” Rudd adopted at a charity event in his youth but now barely remembers, crashes back into his world as a full-blown agent of chaos, stress-testing every part of Rudd’s carefully controlled existence.
Enola Holmes 3
1 July 2026 – Netflix
The Enola Holmes franchise is a bit of an odd one. You basically never hear anybody talking about these films, and yet they apparently bring in massive viewership numbers for Netflix and as a result, here we are with a third film. To be fair, Nancy Springer’s YA novel franchise that is the inspiration for these movies is already 11 books strong, so clearly there is an established fan base. And they will definitely be tuning in for this new film which sees Millie Bobby Brown reprise her role as the titular Enola, the younger sister of the already established and world-renowned detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). Over the course of the previous two films, Enola has proven that the knack for solving mysteries very runs in the family as she uncovered several plots on her adventures – and romances! And her latest escapade will be her toughest yet, as her impending wedding to Lord Tewksbury in Malta is interrupted by the sudden disappearance of Sherlock, forcing Enola to uncover the truth of his kidnapping as only a Holmes can save a Holmes. Philip Barantini (the Emmy Award-winning director of Adolescence) is back in the director’s chair, with the cast rounded out by Louis Partridge, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
2 July 2026 – Disney+
2019’s Ready or Not was the movie that arguably catapulted both star Samara Weaving and co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett into the big time with their massively entertaining horror comedy. As their respective careers blew up, it took seven years for the trio to team up again and continue the story of Grace, the young bride who discovered on her wedding night that wealthy Le Domas family that she’s just married into are actually part of a satanic cult, who – as part of their occult tradition – forced Grace to play a game that would have seen her sacrificed to the devil. “Would have” because the resourceful Grace managed to turn the tables on the Le Domas family, eliminating them all. Unfortunately, that was not the end of it. Picking up literally moments after the first film ended, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come sees Grace discovering that this whole devil worship thing goes way further than just the Le Domases, and now that they are out of the way, it sets in motion a series of events that will find Grace having to fight off several other families as well, all vying for ultimate power. At least she has some family herself this time, as her estranged and totally out-of-her-depth sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) is dragged into the whole bloody affair.
RENTALS/PURCHASES
The following movies have recently become available for digital purchase/rental:
Mortal Kombat II
Purchase: Apple TV – R200
Rental: Apple TV – R170
If you’re a fan of Mortal Kombat but haven’t yet managed to watch the new movie in cinemas, then you need to… Get over here! While still playing in cinemas, video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II has already made its VOD digital debut, allowing you torent the movie for just a little more than the price of a single ticket. While the first film had its moments – most notably the rivalry between Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion and Joe Taslim’s Sub-Zero, as well as the hilarious scene-stealing by Josh Lawson’s Kano – it got bogged down by an incredibly bland protagonist in Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, a character that didn’t even exist in the games. Mortal Kombat II though, fixes all of that, as the focus shifts to long-time franchise fan-favourite Johnny Cage, brought to life brilliantly by Karl Urban. The film finds him as a washed-up action star who gets given a final shot at glory when he is chosen to represent Earth Realm against Outworld in the tenth and final Mortal Kombat tournament. That’s if the likes of Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), and Kung Lao (Max Huang) can actually convince him that not only is this superpowered to-the-death martial arts tournament a real thing, but that losing it will result in Earth being invaded by an evil despot. Maybe Cage can even use his erstwhile leading man charm to convince Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), the Princess of Outworld, and her handmaiden Jade (Tati Gabrielle) to switch allegiances and fight for Earthrealm instead. All while looking cool, of course! The result, as Noelle notes in her 7/10 review, is a film that may be “(consciously) dumb and superficial”, but is “the best kind of blockbuster junk food. Playing more to franchise fans over casual viewers, or people unfamiliar with 2021 predecessor Mortal Kombat, the film is all in in paying tribute to its over-the-top source material.”
