Disney+ is starting the new year strong, with one of the most hyped science fiction films of 2023 coming to the small screen, as well as a groundbreaking new Marvel Cinematic Universe series that may actually overcome MCU fatigue.

Class of ’09 (Limited Series)

Here’s one for people who enjoyed A Murder at the End of the World, and Netflix’s Bodies. In miniseries thriller Class of ’09, a specially recruited class of FBI agents face immense changes as the U.S. justice system is altered by A.I. and its ability to predict crimes. The series takes place across three distinct time periods: The Past (2009), The Present (2023 and 2025) and The Future (2034), and stars Kate Mara and Brian Tyree Henry.

All episodes of Class of ’09 are streaming from 3 January.

Echo (Limited Series)

Audiences first met deaf gang leader Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) in 2021 miniseries Hawkeye. In her own spin-off, Maya retreats to her hometown in Oklahoma, where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her community. Except, her brutal former employer and mentor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) isn’t far behind.

Along with featuring a disabled protagonist, Echo is notable for being the first show released under the Marvel Spotlight banner (meaning it is intended to be largely standalone, with no prior knowledge required), and the first Disney+ MCU series to feature graphic violence. In another first for a MCU series, all five episodes of Echo will drop on 10 January, exclusive to Disney+.

The Creator (Film)

From Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One and 2014’s Godzilla, The Creator is an original and visually strikingly sci-fi actioner set during a devastating future war between humans and AI. An ex-special forces agent (John David Washington) is recruited to destroy a war-ending super weapon made by the computers, but discovers it’s a simulant child. Also in the cast are Gemma Chan, Allison Janney and Ken Watanabe.

Watch The Creator from 17 January.

The Artful Dodger (Series)

Here’s a surprise, and highly energetic, sequel to Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist, set in 1850s Australia. Having escaped prison and enlisted in the Royal Navy, Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), AKA The Artful Dodger, has become an accomplished surgeon thanks to his fast, pickpocketing-honed fingers. Life in the colony is going well for Jack until his old criminal mentor Fagin (David Thewlis) appears, luring him back into a world of crime.

All eight episodes of The Artful Dodger come to Disney+ on 17 January.
