Welcome back from the Easter break. We’ve skipped the April Fool’s Day pranks to focus only on the truth, which is that there is a lot of great content coming to Showmax this month. Below you’ll find our top picks, with the full release schedule available here.

Series

Hand down our most highly anticipated series for the month (across all streaming services), True Detective returns with Night Country, the crime thriller’s fourth season which is its most watched run, and most critically acclaimed too. Jodie Foster and Evangeline Navarro star in this tale of two detectives who must unravel the mysterious disappearance of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. This as the long winter night falls in this remote part of the world.

Binge all episodes of True Detective: Night Country from 22 April.

Political tension, history and forbidden romance collide in Fellow Travelers, based on the novel by Thomas Mallon. Kicking off during the Lavender and Communist Scare of the McCarthy Era, Fellow Travelers tracks the love affair of two very different men (played by Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey) over the course of four decades through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 70s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Stream Fellow Travelers from 26 April, with new episodes on Fridays.

Need a bit more neo-noir in your life? Check out Tokyo Vice in its Season 1 entirety from 12 April.

In this twisty crime tale, American journalist Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) explores the underbelly of Tokyo in the late 1990s as part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. Inspired by Adelstein’s non-fiction account, Tokyo Vice comes with extra pedigree in the form of Michael Mann (Heat) as the first episode’s director and series executive producer, while the cast also includes Ken Watanabe and Rinko Kikuchi. The show has already been renewed for a second season, which is currently screening overseas.

Films

Culture clash romcom My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (out now). Animated adventure Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (14 April). Animated superhero actioner Justice League: Warworld (29 April). That’s just to start in terms of Showmax’s new movie additions in April.

There’s also The Flash, one of the better entries in the DC Extended Universe in recent years (our review). Worlds collide when Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) uses his super speed to change the past. But his attempt to save his family creates a world without superheroes, forcing him to recruit a very different Batman (Michael Keaton) and Kryptonian (Sasha Calle) to fend off despotic alien General Zod (Michael Shannon).

Stream The Flash from 22 April.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got a striking animated treatment for their latest big screen outing, Mutant Mayhem, and it earned the heroes in a half shell a ton of acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Here’s our review.

In this TMNT reboot (which clearly learned a lot from Spider-Man: Enter the Spider-Verse), the Turtles join forces with high schooler and wannabe journalist April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri) to take on a mysterious crime syndicate. Their goal is to earn acceptance from the people of New York City. The star-stuffed voice cast includes Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Seth Rogan, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Rudd and John Cena.

Watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from 28 April on Showmax.

Finally on the movie front, there’s Steven Spielberg’s ode to the magic of cinema: The Fabelmans. Considered a semi-autobiographical masterwork, The Fabelmans was nominated for seven Oscars in 2023, and follows aspiring filmmaker Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) as he grows up in post-World War II Arizona and watches his parents’ marriage crumble. Also with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, and Judd Hirsch.

Watch The Fabelmans from 25 April.

Documentaries

2022 feature film documentary Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off finally arrives on Showmax this month. The 2022 sports expose provides a definitive look at one of the most influential skateboarders of all time, incorporating never-before-seen footage, and frank interviews with Hawk and prominent figures in the sport, including Stacy Peralta and Rodney Mullen.

Stream Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off from 13 April.
