This Friday signals the start of the mid-year school holidays in South Africa, and, unsurprisingly, cinema chains are ensuring families are spoiled for choice.
In addition to the two blockbusters profiled below, there’s the return of Oscar-winning cat adventure Flow over at Nu Metro; mousy hero Stuart Little popping up once again at select Ster Kinekors; Gone With the Wind serving as a Throwback release for grown-up cinephiles; and Bollywood actioner Welcome to the Jungle.
Sci-fi action adventure Supergirl marks the second big screen entry in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s overhauled DCU, following last year’s Superman. With I, Tonya and Cruella’s Craig Gillespie at the helm, Supergirl uses Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s acclaimed comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as its basis to tell the definitive tale of Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl. An off-the-grid birthday bar crawl in the far reaches of the galaxy takes a dark turn for Kara (Milly Alcock) and canine companion Krypto when a ruthless adversary strikes, leading our heroine to join forces with Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a girl pursuing the same villain. Oh, and there’s anti-hero mercenary Lobo (Jason Momoa) in the picture too.
Look out, not up, for our Supergirl review soon.
Enter the seventh movie in the Despicable Me universe, and third Minions spin-off. And yet people still can’t get enough of the little yellow henchpeople created by studio Illumination. Animated comedy Minions & Monsters takes the prequel action even further back in time, 40 years before the events of Minions, and sees the title characters take up moviemaking in 1920s Hollywood. Their project demands frightening creatures, though, and when their search for monsters puts the world in peril, it’s up to them to stop what they’ve unleashed and save the day. The voice cast of Minions & Monsters includes the likes of South Park’s Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges and Jesse Eisenberg.
