Along with the Star Wars blockbuster, this week’s release schedule also includes the return of Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, the digital debut of Evil Dead Burn, the second season of sci-fi adaptation Dark Matter, Gal Gadot’s The Runner, and more!

Dark Matter S2

28 August 2026 – Apple TV+

The first season of Apple TV’s adaptation of the hit Blake Crouch sci-fi novel Dark Matter was a solid alternative reality thriller with just enough good ideas to paper over the cracks (which is basically how I felt about the source material). And as a result, it didn’t take long for a second season renewal. But here’s the thing: The first season already adapted all the story there is, but then added on another twist so that it could keep going. Historically, that has rarely been a good idea, but maybe Dark Matter can be one of the few that actually pull it off. Either way, this season picks up after Jason Dessen’s (Joel Edgerton) grueling search through multiple realities for his wife Daniella (Jennifer Connelly) and son. Having finally found them as well as a world that actually seems safe, they have settled into a quiet new life. But Jason’s obsession with the Box (his quantum tunneling invention that kickstarted all this multiversal madness) has not gone away, and neither has Daniela’s growing paranoia about the people out there still looking for them, and it isn’t long before their fragile reality starts to come apart.

Mousetrap S1

28 August 2026 – Netflix

From catfish to rats, Korean thriller Mousetrap follows extremely reclusive novelist Moon-jae who suddenly finds his solitary life shattered when his name, face, money, and even his are fingerprints stolen by a mysterious figure known as “The Rat”. Stripped of any identity and resources, Moon-jae has to desperately turn to unlikely allies in the form of Noja, a ruthless loan shark trying to recover the money he’s lost, and Sun-yong, a dogged detective with his own reasons for finding The Rat.

I don’t think it’s controversial at all to say that director Guy Ritchie has not been able to match the output of his prime years for quite some time. The exception to that though has been The Gentlemen. A spinoff (sorta) to his 2019 movie of the same name, The Gentlemen was a wildly entertaining British gangster tale that followed Eddie (Theo James), a British army officer who inherits a dukedom from his father, as well as a crumbling debt-ridden estate hiding a surprise underground: A large cannabis farm belonging to incarcerated gangster Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone). Over the course of eight twisty and explosive episodes, we followed Eddie and criminal partner Susie (Kaya Scodelario) as they attempted to turn that cannabis farm into a fledgling criminal empire, ruffling a whole lot of feathers along the way. Now season two picks up one later, as Eddie and Susie have joined forces to expand Bobby’s criminal empire overseas. Except Bobby himself is hampering their efforts by making increasingly unsound decisions. Soon, Eddie and Susie will need to make a decision whether to stay loyal to Bobby or take action and risk losing it all.

Chad Powers S2

3 September 2026 – Disney+

There was a time last year where it felt like Glen Powell was in everything. The latest in a long line of handsome actors that Hollywood tried turning into an overnight superstar, Powell sorta-kinda didn’t quite hit the mark there. That’s not to say he didn’t have successes though. Sports comedy series Chad Powers was one of Powell’s biggest hits as it ranked no.1 on both Disney+ and Hulu at the time of its release, so it was no surprise when it got picked up for a second season. The show followed Russ Holliday (Powell), a star quarterback at a major college who loses all his status when he disgraces himself on the field. With a ruined reputation, but still wanting to play football Russ disguises himself as the bumbling Chad Powers in order to join a floundering team at a smalltime college. The first season saw “Chad” become a superstar on the field but also raise suspicions all around at his increasingly odd behaviour off it. Now the walls are closing in on Russ’s lie and if Chad wants to survive the regular season and lead the Catfish to the College Football Playoff, he will have to a turn to a very unlikely ally.

Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly

1 September 2026 – Netflix

It was the kangaroo hop heard around the world. While drama at the Olympics is not uncommon, nobody could have prepared the world for what transpired at the 2024 Summer Olympics during the historic debut of breakdancing at the sporting event. During the opening stage of the event, Rachael “Raygun” Gunn represented Australia with a dance routine that would immediately become an internet sensation, but for all the wrong reasons. With flailing, uncoordinated moves that could only be described as nonsensical, Gunn would not receive a single point from any of the judges in all three her battles. While Australians looked on in horror as their country’s representative seemingly embarrassed them, the internet was flooded with memes mocking Gunn’s performance as well as demands for answers as to how she managed to qualify for the Olympics in the first place. Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly is a documentary feature film that takes viewers inside the rise, fall, and eventual reinvention of “Raygun”, detailing how she went academic to competitive breakdancer to viral meme factory. Along with the avalanche of jokes, misinformation and conspiracy theories also swirled, and this documentary sets out to finally get the facts right.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

2 September 2026 – Disney+

When The Mandalorian and Grogu debuted in cinemas earlier this year, it was not quite what fans had been expecting for the first theatrical release for the historic sci-fi franchise since 2019’s much-maligned Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Essentially just an extended episode of The Mandalorian TV series, The Mandalorian and Grogu was fun but lacking in the stakes and scope you would usually get from a Star Wars blockbuster. It definitely had a cinema level budget though as it looked and sounded amazing. However, as Noelle noted in her 7/10 review, “in focusing on the superficial razzle dazzle, The Mandalorian and Grogu ends up devoid of emotional depth, doing nothing to develop the tender found family dynamic that propelled the Mandalorian to success in the first place”. As such, it would probably make for better viewing on the small screen which is exactly what you can do now as the film debuts on Disney+ next week.

And if you’re not all Mandalorianed out after that film, debuting alongside it is new special LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian. Riffing on characters and story bits from all three seasons of The Mandalorian series, this animated special is filled with unexpected laughs and action-packed fun for fans of all ages.

The Runner

2 September 2026 – Prime Video

Known for heavy dramas and political thrillers such as The Last King of Scotland and State of Play, Oscar-winning British filmmaker Kevin Macdonald not who I expect to be at the helm of a Prime Video action movie, but here we are. The Runner stars Gal Gadot as Maia Marten a high-profile lawyer who has climbed to the top of London’s legal world by being sharp and resourceful. She will need all her skills and more though when a routine morning run turns into a nightmare with a single phone call from a mysterious man claiming to have taken her son. To see her son again, all she has to do is keep moving, tell no one, and follow every command. Quickly. Forced to sprint through the city to perform one questionable task after another, Maia has to confront just how far she will go to bring her son home safe.

Evil Dead Burn

Well, how’s this for a hell of a surprise? Released in cinemas just over a month ago, Evil Dead Burn is the sixth installment in creator Sam Raimi’s iconic horror franchise and is now already available for digital rental at home. Just like predecessor Evil Dead Rise, it’s not Raimi behind the camera though, with Sébastien Vaniček taking the reins. And based on critical reception, the franchise newcomer has done a bloody good job… heavy on the “bloody”. The film follows Alice (Souheila Yacoub), a recently widowed woman who seeks solace with her husband’s family after his abrupt and mysterious death. As Alice soon discovers though, her late husband and his family are descendants of a leading researcher on demonic possession, and their nightmarish past has now come back to haunt her.
