The latest from comedian-turned-horror-master Jordan Peele, a local drama, and a Dragon Ball movie (now that Fortnite appearance makes sense!) all hit the big screen this Friday. Let’s see if any of them are enough to entice you into cinemas.

Nope

It’s been a real challenge to avoid spoilers for this one, which released on 22 July in the US, so we’re going keep things brief. Nope reunites acclaimed writer-director Jordan Peele with his Get Out leading man Daniel Kaluuya, and also brings on board Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun, for this tale of residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. We may be wrong but Nope looks like a darker, more unnerving take on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, as Peele sets out to put his unique spin on summer blockbusters. If you’re in a real “treat yo self” mood, check out Nope at IMAX, as the film was specifically shot for the immersive mega screen format.

2 Thirds of a Man

This South African drama, which has been winning awards on the global film festival circuit, explores the coming-of-age story of Justin (Mario Ogle), a talented but guarded teenager returning to Cape Town after years in smalltown Beaufort West. Back in the big city, Justin must navigate unique challenges as a first-year student at Rocklands University. These include meeting the girl of his dreams, brushes with Cape Flats gang violence, and the social pressures of being a young Coloured man in contemporary South Africa.

Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO

Anime fans, this one’s for you! The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Goku. Individuals who carry on its spirit have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two ultra-powerful beings call themselves “Super Heroes”. They start attacking Piccolo and Goku’s son Gohan… forcing the real heroes to tap into their full strength and defend the world from this new threat. You can watch the Japanese-language Super Hero, which is mostly 3D animated, in either Engish subbed or dubbed, depending on your preference.
