Now that Matty is gone (sniff), I guess it falls to me to start reporting on all things Pokémon Go. Seeing as I’m the only person I know still actively playing it! And what better event to spread the love than Valentine’s Day.

The latest holiday-themed Pokémon Go event is live, with similar changes to what we’ve seen before. You can expect to earn candies faster – double candies when catching Pokémon, and you earn candies from your walking buddy twice as fast. This is less than Halloween’s candy rate, which saw you earning candies four times as fast as the normal rate.

There aren’t many new spawns as far as I can tell, unlike the overload of Ghost types that spawned around Halloween, or the Christmas-themed Pikachu. This time you can just expect to see a lot of pink Pokémon, in keeping with the aesthetic of the holiday. Clefairy, Jigglypuff and Lickitung will be more common, plus you’ll have a better chance of seeing Clefables and Chanceys in the wild.  You’re also likely to get more Igglybuff, Cleffa and Smoochums out of your egg hatches.

The biggest change is the lures, which will now last a crazy six hours instead of their usual half hour. Seeing as the only time Pokémon Go players actually meet up is around Pokéstops and Gyms, this is probably Niantic’s way of getting you to socialise with more people IRL.

I’ll be totally honest, this event isn’t that great. It’s still cool, but it’s unlikely to get many people excited. Earning candies faster is great, but it’s a far cry from Halloween’s insane candy rate. And I have already caught about 8 Clefairies today so that’s going to get pretty old pretty fast.

The event runs from 8 February at 11 a.m. PST (so 6 p.m for GMT+2), to next Wednesday 11 a.m. PST. If this is enough to lure you back in to playing Pokémon Go, then let me know! Seriously, it’s really lonely playing on my own 🙁
