After some relative quiet, it’s a bumper streaming release schedule this week headlined by the VOD debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Ben Affleck’s new film Animals, Marvel series VisionQuest, the Matchbox Cars movie with John Cena, and more!
SERIES
The Trap S1
13 October 2026 – Netflix
The Trap is a psychological thriller based on the 2015 German novel of the same name by Melanie Raabe, which won her the Stuttgart Crime Prize for best crime debut before receiving international translation. And now it’s a Netflix thriller series! Renowned author Lisa Konrad (Friederike Becht) hasn’t left her house in nearly 10 years, ever since she witnessed the murder of her sister, Anna (Josephine Thiesen). But when Lisa believes she recognizes the killer on television, she sets out to trap him using herself as the bait.
Tyson S1
13 October 2026 – Netflix
In his prime, Mike Tyson was arguably the most feared athlete in the world, thanks to his blend of ferocious power and skill in the ring, and his dangerously charismatic persona outside of it. And while his heavyweight boxing days are long behind him (we’ll just conveniently forget that Jake Paul farce), Tyson remains an incredibly interesting and polarizing figure. Tyson is a raw four-part documentary that looks to dive deep on just what “Iron” Mike Tyson the man he has become, looking at his brutal Brooklyn childhood, his meteoric rise to heavyweight glory, and then substance abuse, rape conviction, public meltdowns, and of course the infamous ear biting incident. With never-before-seen material and rare access to his family, friends, and foes, it’s an intimate portrait of greatness, collapse, and a man still confronting the cost of his legacy.
VisionQuest S1
14 October 2026 – Disney+
The last chapter in the Marvel trilogy that began with the genre breaking WandaVision and continued in the delightful Agatha All Along is finally here. VisionQuest picks up with everybody’s favourite synthezoid… but just not the one we quite know. The end of WandaVision saw the debut of White Vision, a rebuilt weaponised version of the artificial hero destroyed in Infinity War, who managed to recover the memories of the original Vision after battling the fake human version of Vision that Wanda had created with her make-believe reality spell. It’s complicated, okay? And all that complication has resulted in Vision secluding himself in hiding as he tries to figure exactly who he is. And who is, is a collection of AI personas embedded in his programming, including Friday, Edith, Jarvis, and the infamous Ultron (portrayed by the real James Spader), who have now all become a dysfunctional family of sorts. But Vision’s private for search for his new meaning is abruptly put on hold when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s magic make-believe son, somehow reincarnate.
MOVIES
Animals
9 October 2026 – Netflix
Whenever Ben Affleck has pulled double duty and stepped behind the camera to also direct, the resulting film has been something special. Which is why I am a little confused as to the relative lack of high-profile media push for Animals, the latest filmmaking project that the Oscar winner stars in, directs, and co-wrote acclaimed Oscar nominated screenwriter Billy Ray (Captain Phillips, Richard Jewell, Flightplan). And if the two of them didn’t bring enough star power to this project already, Affleck stars opposite multiple Emmy Award winner Kerry Washington, multiple Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Gillian Anderson, Emmy Award Winner Steven Yuen, and more! Damn, that’s a lot of talent! Crime thriller Animals sees Affleck and Washington star as Mark and Abigail Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife, who find themselves drawn into a web of deception when their son is kidnapped. As they scramble to raise the ransom payment, they’re forced to make choices – and reveal secrets – that could tear their world apart.
Matchbox: The Movie
9 October 2026 – Apple TV+
While the last few Fast and Furious movies have not been reaching the franchise’s former heights, there were a few things they did very right. Arguably the best of these decisions was including John Cena. The wrester-turned-actor was a charismatic natural as a wiseass action man behind the wheel of some heavy machinery. I’m assuming that toy makers Mattel looked at that and went “Yep, let’s just have him do that again” when they looked at turning their long running Matchbox Cars range into a big budget action movie. Directed by Extraction’s Sam Hargrave (so you know that action choreography is going to be good!), Matchbox: The Movie sees Cena playing undercover CIA agent Sean Walker who chooses the wrong time to return to his smalltown home and meet up with his childhood friends (played by Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris). When the entire group is swept up by some bad guys who think Sean is in possession of a missing nuclear warhead, the friends have to find a way to work together as they get embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world. Oh, and if you’re wondering where the link was, their favourite pastime together as kids was playing with Matchbox Cars as kids. Of course. Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Golshifteh Farahani and Danai Gurira co-star.
Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger
11 October 2026 – Disney+
In the heights of the Britpop alternative movement of the 90s, one band ruled over them all: Oasis. The Manchurian rock band, fronted by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, are widely considered to be the most globally successful group of the era and one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Their list of accolades is massive and they sold out arenas all over the world. And then in 2009 it all fell apart as Liam abruptly quit the band after a heated row with Noel. What followed was a mess of lawsuits, public spats, and just all-around bad blood. But as the saying goes: Time heals all wounds. And in 16 years later, Liam and Noel Gallagher didn’t just reconcile, but also staged a triumphant reunion tour dubbed Oasis Live ’25. Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger is the feature documentary that takes us both behind and in front of the curtain of one of the biggest musical events of 2025. It includes rehearsal, backstage, and onstage access as well as the first joint interviews with Noel and Liam in over twenty years, capturing the transformative experiences of the band and their fans across the world.
Love of Your Life
14 October 2026 – Prime Video
If you’re looking at having a good bittersweet cry on the couch this week, then look no further than Love of Your Life. Directed by Rachel Morrison (The Fire Inside), this romantic drama stars Margaret Qualley as Maya, a free-spirited young American woman whose chance encounter with Charlie (Gabriel Basso) on an impromptu European trip sets in motion a sweeping romance that looks set to last forever. When that forever is abruptly upended though, Maya is sent hurtling toward an unexpected new life – one that will force her to reckon with who she is, what she wants, and how to love again. Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrance, and Corey Johnson co-star.
RENTALS/PURCHASES
The following movies have recently become available for digital purchase/rental:
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Rental: Apple TV – R170
Purchase: Apple TV – R200
Spider-Man! Spider-Man! Does whatever a spider can! And apparently what a spider can do is earn over $2.5 billion at the box office. What this means is that most of you reading this probably watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day in cinemas already. But if you somehow haven’t yet, or just want to rewatch it at home, you can now digitally rent or buy it exclusively on Apple TV. Yes, Apple TV and not Disney, despite this being a Marvel movie. That’s due to Spider-Man still technically being owned by Sony who have a deal with Apple (although a Disney+ release will probably happen in the near future as well). As for Brand New Day, this one deals with the repercussions of the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home where Peter Parker (Tom Holland) had Doctor Strange erase all memories of him from the world in order to protect both his identity and his loved ones. Now resigned to a lonely life, it has allowed Peter to focus all his efforts on being Spider-Man, effectively cleaning up New York City and becoming the popular superhero he always wanted to be. But when mysterious crimes related to government organization Damage Control keep happening, and his former love MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) find themselves in the crosshairs despite having no recollection of who he is, it forces Peter to make some hard choices in order to save both the city and the people he cares about the most in life.
Insidious: Out of the Further
Rental: Apple TV – R130
Purchase: Apple TV – R160
Confession: I don’t know why, but I have not seen a single one of the Insidious movies. Yes, yes, I know. What that means is that the title of the latest franchise entry is one of the most horrific things I’ve seen in ages because “Insidious: Out of the Further” is scaring the grammar right out of me! Jokes aside, this sixth installment in the popular horror series is a follow-up to 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door but shifts away from the scary adventures of the Lambert family and follows mostly new characters. Gemma (Amelia Eve) is a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, who discovers that she is able to travel into The Further – the dark dimension between Heaven and Hell – and bring back what lives there to the mortal world. As expected, this is a bad idea for everybody!
The Get Out
Rental: Apple TV – R50
Purchase: Apple TV – R150
No, this is not the acclaimed Jordan Peele horror movie, but rather the latest in a line of movies in which Russell Crowe puts on a weirdly unspecific accent (I can’t be the only one that’s noticed the trend, right?!). The Get Out sees the Oscar winner starring as Marco Kapac, a hard as nails Albanian nightclub owner whose rough lifestyle catches up to him in the form of a “cardiac incident”. Inspired by this health scare to finally retire in Thailand with his girlfriend, Marco starts getting his affairs in order. Affairs that are promptly thrown into disorder when a pair of smalltime crooks (Aaron Paul, Nina Dobrev) rob him of his nest egg, setting into motion a deadly game of cat and mouse.
