Australian thriller Last Seen has quite the simple but very intriguing hook. Patrick Brammal stars as Ian Ridley, a dispatcher who handles an emergency call from a young girl who sounds to be in distress but is cut off before he can get many details. The one detail that did come up though is that she is unsure if her name is Sarah or Mags, the latter being the name of Ian’s daughter who went missing many years ago and has been presumed dead ever since. With that one clue, Ian embarks on a frantic search, risking everything to find the girl who may be his child.

I mentioned recently that Prime Video has seemingly carved out a niche for itself when it comes to teen romantic dramas, but that doesn’t mean the other streamers aren’t throwing respective hats into the genre ring as well. Netflix’s latest effort is Crew Girl, which follows Teagan Tao, a highly ranked competitive singles rower. After a humiliating family scandal, Teagan is forced to start her life over in a new town, attending an elite prep school. When she discovers there’s no girls’ rowing team at her new school though, she takes charge of the dysfunctional all-boys crew just to get back on the water. As she fights to win the team over, she goes head-to-head with the team’s arrogant captain, and finds unexpected chemistry with the team’s underrated and overlooked would-be MVP.

Despite the star power of leads Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branaugh, I wasn’t paying too much attention to new buddy action film Mayday. But that was before I discovered that the new Apple TV+ exclusive was written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the same filmmaking duo behind Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and who penned Spider-Man: Homecoming. So, yes, consider me very interested now! Set in the height of the Cold War, Mayday stars Reynolds as Lieutenant Troy Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot who is sent on a top-secret mission in Russian territory. When the operation goes horribly wrong, forcing Kelly to violently crash behind enemy lines, the American’s life is saved by the unlikeliest rescuer: Branagh’s Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture. Could this mismatched duo actually work together to survive the forces still out looking for Kelly?

It’s not often that a new Guy Ritchie movie just flies under the radar, especially not one starring the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, and Eiza González. But that’s what seemingly happened with In the Grey, a new action thriller from the fan-favourite British filmmaker that just came and went in cinemas earlier this year with barely a blip on the social radar. If you missed it – and based on its dismal box office earnings, chances are you did – you can now check out Ritchie’s latest film on Prime Video. In the Grey follows a cutthroat lawyer and her team of elite operatives who specialize in recovering debts and assets for wealthy clients. When a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune, they’re sent to take it back in an impossible heist that erupts into a deadly game of strategy, deception and survival.
Psycho Killer

Released in cinemas earlier this year, horror-thriller Psycho Killer is finally getting a local release. Maybe. My hesitation is due to the fact that I can’t find any official confirmation that it will actually be hitting our Disney+ service here in South Africa, but it has been noted that it will be added in other regions next week. And given that’s from the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, it’s good bet that it will be slashing its way onto your screens soon. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven, 8mm, Sleepy Hollow) for debut director Gavin Polone, Psycho Killer stars Georgina Campbell as Jane Archer, a Highway Patrol officer who witnessed her husband being brutally murdered by a serial killer dubbed by the media as the “Satanic Slasher”. Becoming obsessed with tracking down the slasher and bringing him to justice, her quest leads her on an increasingly depraved journey as she investigates various suspects to unmask the real killer.

The Despicable Me/Minions franchise continues to print money, with Illumination’s latest having earned over $514 million at the box office off a $85 million production budget. Minions & Monsters is a prequel to 2015’s Minions (which itself was a prequel to Despicable Me – Please keep up), jumping all the way back to the 1920s to tell the “rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
Jackass: Best and Last

If you’ve spent the last four years pining for the entertainment of watching grown men find creative ways to hit each other in the testicles and then laugh about it, then you’re in luck! Following on from 2022’s Jackass Forever, Jackass: Best and Last is the final hurrah (for real this time) for Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man, Chris Pontious, and the rest of the Jackass crew after more than 25 years of putting their bodies on the line for their fans. This cinematic swan song boasts new ridiculous, and clearly painful stunts, alongside a collage of some of the crew’s best hits over the years.
The Death of Robin Hood

Hugh Jackman has made his name playing fabled heroes, even in their old age, and now he can add another to that list. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, The Death of Robin Hood is a dark adaptation of the 17th-century ballad Robin Hood’s Death and stars Jackman as the legendary bow-wielding heroic outlaw, now well past his best stealing-from-the-rich days. This older Robin is living in self-imposed exile in the wilderness, having rejected his folk hero status as he is tormented by the often-bloody deeds that earned him fame. When he is wounded by a family member of one of his past victims, seeking her revenge, Robin has to take refuge in a priory, where he finds himself at the mercy of the mysterious prioress. Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe co-star.
