Proving yet again it’s a streamer with a quality over quantity mindset, Apple TV ended up with the most wins at this year’s Emmy Awards, largely thanks to its acclaimed breakout series of the last 12 months. We’re talking dystopian sci-fi Pluribus, dysfunctional family comedy-drama Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and, most importantly, horror comedy Widow’s Bay.

It was Widow’s Bay, starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a cursed island community, that ended up with the most Emmy Award wins overall this year – when you factor in both the headline-grabbing Primetime ceremony, which took place last night, and the Creative Arts Emmys, the behind-the-scenes production accolades that are dished out at two other events earlier in the month.

The final tally for the 78th Emmy Awards was as follows:

  • HBO Max’s The Pitt: 25 nominations –> 6 wins (2 at the Primetime ceremony)
  • HBO Max’s Hacks: 24 nominations –> 2 wins (1 at the Primetime ceremony)
  • Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay: 19 nominations –> 14 wins (6 at the Primetime ceremony)
  • Apple TV’s Pluribus: 18 nominations –> 6 wins (2 at the Primetime ceremony)
  • Netflix’s Beef: 16 nominations –> 3 wins

Of the “big name” categories last night, hospital drama The Pitt won Best Drama and Best Lead Actor (for Noah Wyle) for the second year in a row; Jean Smart was named Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, making history as she claimed the Emmy for the fifth time straight. Meanwhile, Shea Seehorn’s role in Pluribus saw her win Best Lead Actress in a Drama; while Matthew Rhys scored the title of Best Lead Actor in a Comedy for Widow’s Bay – which also won Best Comedy Series for its first season. Rhys also scored himself a Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie accolade for The Beast in Me.
