There’s just one new cinema release in South Africa this Friday the 13th, but it’s arguably the most high-profile, and highly anticipated new movie of recent weeks. Mixing sci-fi and horror, M3GAN continues a long on-screen tradition of killer children’s dolls that includes the likes of Chucky and Annabelle – but adds some of its own hi-tech flavour.

Brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams) doesn’t know how to cope when her orphaned niece Cady (The Haunting of Hill House’s Violet McGraw) comes to live with her. Under intense pressure, she decides to pair her highly-advanced M3GAN prototype, a marvel of artificial intelligence, with Cady to be the girl’s friend and protector. Except M3GAN takes her responsibilities far further than anyone expected.

Released under the Blumhouse banner, M3GAN is based on a story by horror masters James Wan (The Conjuring, Annabelle, Saw) and Akela Cooper (Malignant, Hell Fest), with Cooper writing the screenplay. Read our full review of M3GAN now.
