Turning Red

Breaking new ground, Turning Red is the first Pixar film to be solely directed by a woman, the first to take place in Canada, and the second to feature an Asian lead character after Up. This, of course, means it has been relegated to a Disney+ only launch in territories where Disney+ is available. Luckily for South Africans, we get to catch it on the big screen.

Turning Red is set in Toronto in the early Noughties, and introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying a dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), Mei “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.

Jackass Forever

Some people never learn. Celebrating the joy of being back together with your best friends and a perfectly executed shot to the dingdong, the original Jackass crew return for another round of hilarious, wildly absurd, and often dangerous displays of comedy with a little help from some exciting new cast members. Johnny and the team are here to push the envelope even further in their middle age.

Cyrano

Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage), dazzles everyone with his ferocious wordplay and brilliant swordplay. However, he’s convinced his appearance renders him unworthy of the affections of the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), a devoted friend who’s in love with someone else. Atonement, Anna Karenina and Darkest Hour’s Joe Wright directs this musical take on the classic love triangle tale.
