Just two new movies debut in South African cinemas this week. One is the revival of a classic science fiction franchise; the other is an unsettling horror film. Learn about them both below.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes resurrects the beloved Planet of the Apes franchise, and continues the story kicked off in the previous trilogy. Set nearly 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), ape civilizations dominate while humans have turned feral and hunted. As the ape clans clash, young chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) embarks on a journey that sees him meet young human Mae (The Witcher’s Freya Allan), question everything he knows about the past, and make choices that will define the future of both species. The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball directs this Planet of the Apes installment, which is also screening at IMAX.

Sure to appeal to fans of Talk to Me, and maybe Final Destination, supernatural horror film Tarot sees a group of college friends unwittingly unleash a chilling evil trapped in a cursed deck of tarot cards. One by one, they are forced to face, and flee, the terrible futures foretold in their readings. Tarot is based on the 1992 novel Horrorscope, and features relatively familiar faces from TV and film Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley and Avantika Vandanapu.
