From earlier efforts like The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel, to his recent hits Longlegs and The Monkey, filmmaker Osgood Perkins has established himself as a master of horror – one who knows how to layer on the quiet dread and discomfort to powerful emotional effect.
Screening in South African cinemas from 21 November is Keeper, Perkins’s slow-burn latest, which reunites him with the criminally underrated Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black and She-Hulk fame. In the film, a couple (Rossif Sutherland is the male lead) head to a secluded cabin for their anniversary weekend, only to realise a dark entity is lurking there, and the cabin has a long, disturbing history. Baked into that narrative are themes such as obsession, control, and hidden dangers in relationships.
The trailer for Keeper includes high praise from fellow iconic names in horror, like Guillermo Del Toro, James Wan, Fede Alvarez, Damien Leone, and even legendary game maker Hideo Kojima. Slashfilm, meanwhile, is calling the film “one big bowl of horror movie stew.”
The way it’s being set up in the marketing, Keeper is definitely one of those movies you want to watch as early as possible, to escape overhype and form your own opinion. Which is where we come in!
Thanks to our friends at Sun Africa Group, we have five sets of double tickets to give away to watch Keeper at any Ster Kinekor cinema in South Africa (that’s showing the film).
