Following last month’s bumper selection of blockbuster movie additions, Showmax is doing it again in June… and throwing in some favourite returning series, headline-making new shows, and fascinating documentaries. Below are our cherry-picked recommendations, while the complete streaming schedule for the month can be found here.

Film

First out the gate is Mountainhead, exclusive in South Africa to Showmax. The feature film debut of Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, satire Mountainhead sees a group of techbro friends (played by Steve Carell, Ramy Youssef, Cory Michael Smith and Jason Schwartzman) gather for a remote weekend retreat while an international crisis, which they are responsible for, gathers momentum.

Stream Mountainhead from Sunday, 1 June, and look forward to our full review early next week.

On the psychological thriller front there’s Speak No Evil, a remake of a Danish-Dutch film. After an American family make fast friends with a British couple and their son while on vacation, they accept an invitation to the latter’s idyllic country estate. Once they arrive, though, the dream break becomes a nightmare as disturbing truths peek through. The cast is led by James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis.

Stream on Showmax from Monday, 9 June.

Still in the mood for more unsettling horror after Speak No Evil? Osgood Perkins’ demonic serial killer tale Longlegs, with an unhinged Nicolas Cage, comes to Showmax from Thursday, 12 June.

Hands down Showmax’s biggest movie score of the month is Wicked: Part 1 (our review), which feels like it was just in cinemas. Based on the smash-hit Broadway musical, itself serving as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked delves into the backstory of witches Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), who meet as rival university students. Nominated for 10 Oscars this year, and winner of two, the film also stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. Part 2 is in cinemas from November 2025.

Stream Wicked from Friday, 13 June.

Series

June is a month for returning shows, like multi-award-winning comedy Hacks (binge Season 4 from Friday, 6 June); action espionage tale Special Ops: Lioness S2 starring Zoe Saldaña, Morgan Freeman and Nicole Kidman (watch all episodes from Friday, 20 June); and crime thriller Tokyo Vice S2 (available in full from Monday, 23 June).

Of the new series additions, a standout is animated series Iyanu, adapted from Roy Okupe’s graphic novel series. Coming across as Africa’s answer to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Iyanu draws on Nigerian culture, music, and mythology to tell the tale of an orphan who learns that she has divine powers. These will aid her in her destiny to save the kingdom of Yorubaland.

Binge all 10 episodes of Iyanu Season 1 (S2 has already been greenlit) from Friday, 13 June.

P.S. If you’re looking for more family entertainment, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (with Keanu Reeves as Shadow) comes to Showmax from Friday, 27 June.

Superhero fans can also watch an animated adaptation of influential DC multiverse tale Crisis on Infinite Earths, with Part Two arriving on Sunday, 22 June, and Part Three on Sunday, 29 June.

Documentaries

Family, conservation efforts, the struggles of minority groups, and extreme sports, all feature in this month’s selection of documentary series and features.

If we had to single out just one real-life expose, though, fans of Tiger King will definitely want to check out Chimp Crazy, which is made by the same director-producer. This miniseries explores the complicated world of raising chimpanzees, primarily by zooming in on the story of former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix, whose love for one ape, in particular, triggers a whirlwind of controversy.

Binge the four-part Chimp Crazy in its entirety from Friday, 13 June.

Turns out it’s not so great to be part of a boy band. Documentary miniseries Boyzone: Life, Death & Boybands is a 30-years-later retrospective, interviewing Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Michael Graham, the surviving members of Boyzone, an Irish group that broke records in the 1990s. However, as this doccie reveals, behind the scenes of their success were conflict, rivalry, betrayal and tragedy.

Watch all three parts from Wednesday, 11 June.
