The local streaming debut of slapstick revival The Naked Gun, Jason Momoa/Dave Bautista action-comedy The Wrecking Crew, and the return of acclaimed drama series Landman leads this week’s streaming releases.
SERIES
Landman S2
4 February 2026 – Showmax
I keep being told by friends that I need to watch Landman, and I keep wondering how good a show about a guy trying to secure oil deals in Texas could be. Apparently very good, if critical consensus and fan reception is to be believed. Already renewed for a third season, the sophomore showing of the Taylor Sheridan-created drama series sees the return of Billy Bob Thornton in his Golden Globe nominated role of Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman at M-Tex Oil who in the last season found himself moving all the way up the very dirty corporate ladder. Once again drama follows him everywhere in West Texas, where “roughnecks and wildcat billionaires are fueling a boom so big it is reshaping our climate, our economy, and our geopolitics.”
MOVIES
The Wrecking Crew
28 January 2026 – Prime Video
Sneaky Prime Video! I knew that The Wrecking Crew was coming out in January as I was really looking forward to watching Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista cracking skulls and taking down bad guys together. However, when I checked Prime Video’s press portal in preparation for last week’s Stream Scene article, there wasn’t a single mention of it, hence me thinking it’s only out today. Wrong! As it turns out, the action-comedy actually debuted this past Wednesday where it’s currently in the top of the local charts for the service. If you haven’t checked it out yet, well then your weekend movie plans are set. Momoa and Bautista play estranged half-brothers Jonny and James, who reunite after their father’s mysterious death. As they search for the truth of what happened, buried secrets reveal a conspiracy threatening to tear their family apart.
Miracle: The Boys of ’80
30 January 2026 – Netflix
1980. The height of the Cold War between the USA and Soviet Russia. Tensions are fraught. Everything is on a knife edge. And then the Americans strike a blow as decisive as it is surprising… in an ice hockey game. Dubbed “The Miracle on Ice”, the USA men’s ice hockey team’s victory over the USSR during the semi-final match in 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York, is one of sport’s greatest upsets. The four-time defending gold medalist Russians were heavily favoured to roll through the Americans and continue on to the finals, but playing on their home ground with political drama overshadowing every moment set the stage for something unexpected. Using never-before-released 16mm footage capturing the event and all the behind-the-scenes goings-on, this historic underdog story is brought to life in this feature film documentary.
M3GAN 2.0
30 January 2026 – Showmax
I was not as hot on 2023’s M3GAN as some (Tracy echoed my sentiments in her 6.5/10 review), but the commercial success that the killer robot sci-fi horror attained is undeniable ($181 million off a $12 million budget!). But by pivoting away from the campy fun horror stylings that made it a success to a more action-focused approach for this sequel, returning director Gerard Johnstone seemed to have alienated fans as it bombed at the box office with mixed reviews. Your mileage may vary though, so if you missed this one in cinemas last year you can now check it out at home. And if you’re wondering how M3GAN can be back when the previous film saw the increasingly homicidal AI bot destroyed, this sequel sees the underlying tech for M3GAN stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia. This forces M3GAN’s original creator – and eventual destroyer – Gemma to realize that the only option is to fight fire with fire by resurrecting M3GAN and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal.
The Naked Gun
2 February 2026 – Showmax
One of the unexpected success stories of last year, legacy sequel The Naked Gun has been a hit with audiences and critics alike. And most of that success can be laid at the feet of director/co-writer Akiva Schaffer and star Liam Neeson who didn’t waver one bit from the droll slapstick humour that made the original three Naked Gun films starring the late, great Leslie Nielsen such beloved hits in the late 1980s/early 1990s. We don’t really get slapstick parody movies anymore (not good ones at any rate – right, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer???) so watching the perfectly cast Neeson play Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Nielsen’s iconic Police Squad buffoon was seemingly a breath of fresh air. This one sees Drebin Jr.’s investigation into the fatal car crash of software engineer lead him crime novelist femme fatale Beth Davenport (Pamela Anderson), the sister of the car crash victim who believes her brother was killed due to his work with tech billionaire Richard Cane (Danny Huston). Somehow, this all also ties into a bank robbery which Drebin stopped, but unbeknownst to him, was actually a diversion to steal a literal P.L.O.T. Device. Yes, it’s that kind of movie. So, if you like your comedy silly, where you can just switch off your brain and giggle at some absurd buffoonery, then check this one out.
Ella McKay
5 February 2026 – Disney+
Director James L. Brooks, the veteran filmmaker behind Broadcast News, Terms of Endearment, As Good as it Gets, Spanglish, and more, is back to doing what he does best: Big ensemble dramedies. The latest is Ella McKay, which features the likes of Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Rebecca Hall, Albert Brooks, and more. Mackey stars in the title role as an idealistic young thirty-something who becomes the youngest governor of a state ever. But she has to juggle her career successes with a messy family life that looks to unravel it all.
Queen of Chess
6 February 2026 – Netflix
We get not one but two sporting documentaries this week, with the second focusing on an even more incredible achievement than the Miracle on Ice. If you were a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, then this true story is one you don’t want to miss. In 1989, Hungarian chess prodigy Judit Polgár was just 12 years old. She was also the no.1 female player in the entire world. The game of chess had traditionally been dominated by men who simply believed that the opposite sex could never achieve the same heights they did. But having conquered her own division, Polgár set out to change history and challenge the norms, by becoming the overall top chess player of her generation. What followed was a back-and-forth David and Goliath battle that saw the young Polgár face off against not just her older male patriots, but decades of ingrained misogyny. By 15, she would attain the rank of Grandmaster, breaking the record held by the legendary Bobby Fischer as the youngest player to ever do so, and then set her sights on taking the crown from the no.1 ranked Gary Kasparov. Directed by Oscar-winning documentarian Rory Kennedy, this film combines interviews with a now-in-her-40s Polgár as well as several of her peers, as well as archival footage, to provide insights into this incredible story.
Relationship Goals
6 February 2026 – Prime Video
Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child fame and legendary rapper Cliff “Method Man” Smith starring in romcom together is definitely not something I had on my Bingo card for 2026, but here we are. Rowland plays brilliant TV producer Leah Caldwell who is about to make history as the first woman to run New York’s top morning show. There’s just one problem: her ex, Jarrett Roy, (Smith) is up for the same position. Despite their messy break-up Jarret claims he’s a changed man now, thanks to heeding the advice he read in New York Times bestselling book ‘Relationship Goals.’ The very same book that Leah’s friends are now also devouring and seemingly finding their own personal successes in matters of romance. But Leah has no time for that, she has to remain laser-focused on achieving her career goals, if only she could figure out how to get Jarret out of her life again, which is made even harder when the pair are teamed up to work on a story about this life-changing book.
