Fittingly kicking off Halloween month, it’s a couple of infamous killers and deadly disaster that headline this week’s streaming releases with the return of anthology series Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Dexter: Resurrection reviving everybody’s favourite antihero serial killer, and Paul Greengrass’ new true story thriller The Lost Bus. Also look out for The Office spinoff The Paper, and recent reboot Smurfs debuting on VOD, among others.
SERIES
Monster: The Ed Gein Story
3 September 2025 – Netflix
Monster, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s twisted crime drama anthology series focusing society’s most infamous killers, is back with a third season which could not be more perfectly themed for the month of Halloween. Monster: The Ed Gein Story stars Charlie Hunnam as the convicted serial killer and body snatcher who terrorized the community of Wisconsin during the 1950s. Gein’s story was popularized with a fictional retelling of it in Psycho, Robert Bloch’s 1957 novel that would later be famously adapted to screen by Alfred Hitchcock (who is a character in this show), with Gein murderous exploits directly inspiring several of Hollywood’s most infamous on-screen killers such as Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs), and more.
The Sisters Grimm S1
3 September 2025 – Apple TV+
We’ve seen the whole “fairy tales are real” angle played out across popular media several times before, the most notable being the TV series Once Upon a Time from the 2010s, and the long-running Fables comic book series. And now we’ve got an animated take with The Sisters Grimm! Adapted from Michael Buckley’s child fantasy series of novels, The Sisters Grimm stars the voices of Ariel Winter and Leah Newman, a pair of sisters sent to live with their grandmother in the town of Ferryport Landing after their parents disappear. Adding to the upheaval, the girls learned that the town is populated by real-life fairy tale characters created by their ancestors, the infamous Brothers Grimm, and that it all may tie into what happened to their parents.
Dexter: Resurrection S1
6 September 2025 – Showmax
Just over a month ago, the news broke that Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled after just a single season, despite having a previously announced second season renewal. But fans upset that the prequel series won’t be around any longer can at least take solace in the fact that the opposite end of the Dexter timeline is going strong thanks to Dexter: Resurrection. Picking up just ten weeks after the events of 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, itself a sequel to the original mid-2000s breakout hit Dexter, the ten-episode Resurrection sees Michael C. Hall return as the morally ambiguous criminal-targeting serial killer Dexter Morgan. Also featured in the regular cast is Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage, while a roster of high-profile guest stars includes Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, David Dastmalchian, and more. When originally debuting on Paramount+ earlier this year, Resurrection became the service’s biggest streaming premiere ever and has drawn very positive reviews from critics.
The Paper S1
8 September 2025 – Showmax
And keeping with the theme of revivals of classic TV franchises comes The Paper. Billed as a spinoff from The Office, this mockumentary comedy series sees the original documentary crew that captured all the zany shenanigans, pranks, and human drama at Dunder Mifflin set out to do the same at historic but declining Midwestern newspaper the Toledo Truth-Teller. Domhnall Gleeson stars as Ned Sampson, the Truth Teller’s new Editor-in-Chief who has been tasked by the paper’s publisher, Enervate, to revive the publication to its former glory, but only with volunteer reporters. Fans of The Office will immediately notice that included in the ensemble cast is Oscar Nunez reprising his role as Oscar Martinez, previously of Dunder Mifflin but now working as the head accountant in the Enervate office shared by both the Truth Teller and Softees, Enervate’s brand of toilet paper.
MOVIES
The Lost Bus
3 September 2025 – Apple TV+
If you’re in the mood for some “inspired by a true story” drama but also feel for absolute white knuckled, nerve-shredding suspense, then The Lost Bus has you covered. Directed by Paul Greengrass (who already showed us with Captain Phillips just how devastatingly good he was at that balance, not to mention his Bourne franchise experience), this one stars Matthew McConnaughey and America Ferriera and follows a bus driver and a dedicated school teacher who battle to lead 22 children to safety during the 2018 Camp Fire, which would go on to become the deadliest wildfire in California’s history.
Something Wicked This Way Comes
3 October 2025 – Disney+
No, that’s not a mistake. This is a movie from 1983 being featured today, which is not normal for Stream Scene, but we are in October, the month of the para-normal after all! As part of its “Huluween” lineup for the month, Disney will be adding a number of horror themed titles to its library this month, arguably the most interesting of which is Something Wicked This Way Comes. Iconic author Ray Bradbury first penned the original dark fantasy novel of the same name in 1962, introducing the tale of the mysterious Mr. Dark’s travelling Pandemonium Carnival and the chaos it creates in a small midwestern town, but it was in 1963 that Oscar-nominated director Jack Clayton (The Great Gatsby) brought the story to the screen in a particular ghastly way. Sometimes referred to as one of the darkest Disney kids films ever released, Something Wicked This Way Comes rapidly became a cult classic, but modern audiences would have a tough time in trying to watch it now as it wasn’t really available anywhere. That all changes today though as the dark fantasy horror is now available on Disney+ for all!
Stay
3 October 2025 – Disney+
Another “Huluween” addition, but this one a bit more modern, Stay follows Kiara and Miles, a couple who fell in love despite their disparate backgrounds (she’s PhD author focusing on African spirituality, he’s an MMA fighter) only to now have their beautiful marriage fall apart. Just as they find themselves in the lowest point of their broken relationship, they encounter strange supernatural forces seemingly intent on keeping them locked in together in their former home. The only way out will be to stop fighting each other and working together to fight whatever wants them to stay.
RENTALS/PURCHASES
The following movies have recently become available for digital purchase/rental:
Smurfs
Purchase: Apple TV – R170
Rental: Apple TV – R45
When the new reboot of the Smurfs animated movie franchise released earlier this year, you would have expected a bit more hoopla but the latest adaptation of the popular Belgian kids characters smurfed its way into cinemas and then smurfed right back out again with barely a blip. This despite the fact that its voice cast features the likes of Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Kurt Russell, John Goodman, and more popular actors. Even with all that star power, Smurfs got mixed reviews and just about broke even at the box office. But if you need something to entertain the kids at home this weekend, you could probably do a lot worse.
