Thanks to its early VOD release, James Gunn’s incredible Superman reboot is already flying into homes this week. We also get the streaming debut of Disney’s $1 billion Lilo & Stitch live-action remake, and bloody survival horror Dangerous Animals.
SERIES
Two Graves S1
29 September 2025 – Netflix
Things are very light on the new series front this week, but Netflix’s new Spanish production Two Graves immediately caught my thanks to a certain “Professor”. Money Heist lead Álvaro Morte co-stars in this thriller series which follows Isabel (Kiti Mánver), the grandmother of a 16-year-old girl who went missing with her friend two years ago. When the investigation is declared closed due to lack of evidence and suspects, Isabel decides to carry out her own investigation beyond the law. With nothing to lose and willing to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth, she soon uncovers a revenge plot that goes far beyond the lives of two girls.
MOVIES
The Runarounds
1 September 2025 – Prime Video
If Apple TV+ has become the de facto home for science fiction fans thanks to its many acclaimed productions, then Prime Video is surely where all the teenage coming-of-age drama enthusiasts are hanging out. The latest in a long list of entries in this genre for the streamer is The Runarounds, a new show from the creators of that other teen-focused show Outer Banks. This one follows a group of recent high school graduates from Wilmington, North Carolina, who come together during one unforgettable summer after high school graduation to form a rock band, united by their shared love of music and near-impossible dream of stardom. Expect drama, romance, and a whole bunch of original music.
Lilo & Stitch
3 September 2025 – Disney+
I keep hearing people loudly lambasting Disney for doing all these live-action remakes of their own animated movies, and yet these movies keep making money. A lot of money, in fact. In the case of the live-action Lilo & Stitch, it’s made a whopping $1 billion since it hit cinemas just two months ago. And now Disney is looking to replicate that success at home, as the blockbuster smash will be hitting Disney+ next week. For the three of you who have somehow not seen this movie or its original yet, the film follows orphaned Hawaiian girl Lilo Pelekai, who is raised by her struggling older sister, Nani, after their parents’ deaths, and Stitch, an aggressive and near-indestructible alien genetic experiment which escaped its captivity and crash landed on Earth in a spaceship. Pretending to be some kind of dog, Stitch ends up in an animal shelter where he encounters Lilo, who Nani has brought to get a friend in a desperate attempt to help the struggling young girl cope with her life. As Lilo adopts the chaotic Stitch – who has a pair of disguised alien trackers out to get him back – it kicks off a wild adventure all about the power of family, self-love, and identity.
Dog Man
31 August 2025 – Showmax
If your family has already seen Lilo & Stitch and you’re looking for something new to entertain the kids (or yourself), then maybe check out Dog Man. A spin-off from the Captain Underpants franchise – all of which is adapted from Dav Pilkey’s bestselling graphic novel series – Dog Man kicks off with a harebrained but life-saving operation that fuses a faithful police dog and his human police officer together as a new hero, sworn to protect and serve … and fetch, sit and roll over. This unconventional law enforcement hero soon finds his hands – sorry, paws – full stopping the evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat, whose latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff. But when Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, the archenemies must reluctantly join forces.
RENTALS/PURCHASES
The following movies have recently become available for digital purchase/rental:
Superman
Purchase: Apple TV – R200
Rental: Apple TV – R170
And now for easily the biggest release of the week (and one of the best of the year). Yes, James Gunn’s Superman is already flying onto your favourite VOD platform for rental and purchase, barely a month and half after it hit cinemas and revitalized the superhero genre. And you all have John Cena to thank for that. The second season of Peacemaker kicked off last week. but this was not always the plan. According to Gunn, Peacemaker was supposed to return later in the year but then the release schedule changed outside of his control. And that presented a problem, as the show is set after the events of Superman, and Gunn didn’t want anybody who hadn’t seen the movie yet to be confused. Only one thing to do: release Superman on digital early. Which is a great, because more people need to see this movie and be introduced to David Corenswet’s pitch perfect recreation of the world’s most famous superhero, embodying the comic book characteristics of this icon on-screen with a fidelity that we’ve rarely seen before. For the first time since arguably the Christopher Reeve movies, Gunn gave us a Superman movie that wasn’t embarrassed about its source material and instead embraced it, hokey optimism and all. It’s not a movie without flaws, but its inspirational message of hope feels like it could not be timelier. As Noelle stated in her 8.5/10 review, “Superman unashamedly wears its cheesy comic book heritage, and throwback character values, on its sleeve. It’s not especially welcoming to newcomers, and its CGI wobbles at time, but its heart is in the right place, beating steadily and with a warmth that has been missing from the big screen DC Universe for some time.” And for the record, I wholeheartedly agree with her.
Dangerous Animals
Purchase: Apple TV – R170
Rental: Apple TV – R45
Every few years, Hollywood tries to make an actor into a big deal, but just like “fetch”, it’s never going to happen. One such prospect was Jai Courtney. It’s almost universally agreed that the Aussie actor failed to capitalize on his breakout role in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, but every once in a while, he puts out a surprisingly fun performance, almost always as some kind of unhinged bad guy. And reportedly, that’s exactly what he’s doing in Dangerous Animals. The survival horror thriller sees Courtney playing a shark-obsessed serial killer, who abducts a savvy and free-spirited surfer. Held captive on his boat, she must figure out how to escape before he feeds her to the sharks below in some twisted ritual.
