SERIES

The Last Frontier S1

10 October 2025 – Apple TV+

Fans of The Blacklist, you may have your new addition. Co-created by The Blacklist’s Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, The Last Frontier is a new thriller drama series that follows Jason Clarke as Frank Remnick, the lone U.S. marshal in charge of the quiet, rugged barrens of Alaska. When a prison transport plane crashes in the remote Alaskan wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates in Remnick’s jurisdiction, it sets him on a race against time to track down and recapture all these prisoners before disaster strikes. In addition to Clarke, the ensemble cast includes the likes of Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Academy Award Nominee and multi-Emmy winner Alfre Woodard, and more. The show also boasts none other than stuntman-turned-action-filmmaker-extraordinaire Sam Hargraves (Extraction) behind the camera for two of its ten episodes.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch S1

14 October 2025 – Netflix

For a decade and a half, fans of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell had been waiting for a live-action feature film adaptation of the acclaimed stealth video game series, with Tom Hardy playing super spy Sam Fisher. After being stuck in development hell though, the project was officially cancelled last year. But it appeared that some parts of those efforts stayed true, as a new animated series instead got greenlit, developed by Derek Kolstad, co-creator of the John Wick franchise (which is produced by Basil Iwanyk, who had been working on the Splinter Cell film). Splinter Cell: Deathwatch won’t have Hardy in the lead though, but instead Liev Schrieber now voices an older Fisher, now a commander of Fourth Echelon, a covert unit of the U.S. government that specializes in counter-terrorism stealth operations. The series sees the legendary agent drawn back into the field when a wounded young operative seeks out his help. Janet Varney, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Joel Oulette co-star.

Mobland S1

15 October 2025 – Showmax

Speaking of Tom Hardy… star-studded British crime drama Mobland is finally getting a local streaming release on Showmax. A firm fan favourite since its original debut on Paramount+ in March, Mobland follows the kill-or-be-killed battle between two powerful London crime families, the Harrigans and the Stevensons. Standing in the middle is Hardy’s Harry Da Souza, a street-smart fixer whose current allegiance lies with the Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan) and his family. Harry, as dangerous as he is handsome, is more than willing to get his hands dirty for his benefactors, but as kingdom goes up against kingdom, lines will be crossed. Along with Hardy and Brosnan, Mobland also features a stacked cast of British acting standouts including the likes of Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Janet McTeer, Toby Jones, and more. All episodes drop at once next week, so you can binge this one!

MOVIE

The Woman in Cabin 10

10 October 2025 – Netflix

Adapted from Ruth Ware’s 2016 novel of the same name, The Woman in Cabin 10 is a twisty psychological thriller that appears will have you guessing until the very end. Directed and co-written by Simon Stone, the film stars Keira Knightley as Laura Blacklock, a journalist assigned to cover the maiden voyage of a luxury cruise ship. Her very ordinary coverage of Richard Bullmer (Guy Pearce) – the plutocrat funding this cruise as part of a big announcement about the charity foundation run by his wife – and his ultra-wealthy guests is turned upside down though when she witnesses a passenger being thrown overboard. There’s just one problem: Nobody else saw the incident and there are no passengers or crew unaccounted for. So, who did Laura see? Alongside Knightley and Pearce, Stone has assembled quite a lot of talent in the form of Art Malik, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings and Hannah Waddingham.

John Candy: I Like Me

10 October 2025 – Prime Video

One of Hollywood’s most iconic and beloved comedians, Canadian-born actor John Candy sadly passed away in 1994 of a heart attack at just 43 years old. Candy left behind a legacy of beloved classics such as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and Cool Runnings, among many others. John Candy: I Like Me is a feature film documentary that explores the life of the fan-favourite actor, tracking his career from his start on a local sketch comedy show in the 1970s, all the way to become one of the biggest and most revered stars in the 1980s and 1990s.

My Father, the BTK Killer

10 October 2025 – Netflix

When Netflix cancelled David Fincher’s incredible Mindhunter – a dramatization of the very real team of FBI agents who first classified serial killers – one of the most annoying aspects of its departure was that the show spent two seasons quietly teasing and building up one killer in particular, only to never actually debut him fully. That killer was Dennis Rader, better known as BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill). And if you were intrigued by him and want to know more, Netflix now has a documentary for that. My Father, the BTK Killer is a new feature-film documentary told from the incredible perspective Kerri Rawson, the young woman who woke up in 2005 to the news that her father had been arrested, and was in fact BTK, one of the most notorious serial killers in US history. Using both real interviews and interrogation footage, archival photos, and recreations, the film explores the impact of Rader’s crimes on his family and community, following Kerri as she confronts the possibility of additional victims and reckons with childhood memories that may hold hidden traumas.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

13 October 2025 – Showmax

Before Peter Jackson ever brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings to life in mult-award-winning fashion with his trilogy of blockbuster films, the beloved fantasy story was put to screen in animated form. And last year, the franchise finally returned to those roots with The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. An anime adaptation directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), The War of the Rohirrim is a direct prequel to Jackson’s films, set 183 years before those events. Narrated by Miranda Otto, reprising her role as Éowyn, it follows the House of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), the legendary King of Rohan, who is forced to make a daring last stand with his people in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg, when they are attack by the cunning Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), leader of the wild men of Dunland who seeks vengeance against Rohan for the killing of his father. When disaster strikes, Héra (Gaia Wise), the daughter of Helm who was once betrothed to Wulf in an arranged marriage, is forced to take up arms and lead the resistance against the deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

Black Bag

13 October 2025 – Showmax

Maybe blame it on Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh being as prolific a filmmaker as he is, but for some reason Black Bag pretty much sailed underneath most people’s radar when it was released earlier this year, despite it being one of the best reviewed films of 2025 thus far. As someone who also skipped it in theatres, but then watched it when it hit digital rental, I’m here to implore you: Don’t miss this one! In a week full of star-studded releases, Black Bag still stands out with all its Hollywood A-list credentials. Directed by Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Trilogy, Out of Sight), written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park trilogy, Mission: Impossible, Carlito’s Way), and starring multiple award winners Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender with support from Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, Pierce Brosnan, and more, there’s just an insane amount of talent gathered here. And it all lives up to the hype! Black Bag is a taut spy thriller that sees British intelligence officer George Woodhouse (Fassbender) given a mission to investigate a list of suspected traitors. The problem is, one of the names on the list is that of his wife, Kathryn (Blanchett). As his investigation uncovers shocking secrets, George faces the ultimate test: loyalty to his marriage or his country. If you like your spy thrillers intelligent and twisty where it’s nothing but supremely capable operatives outwitting each other with their smarts instead of blowing up buildings and shooting their way out of everything, Black Bag is definitely a movie for you.

RENTALS/PURCHASES

The following movies have recently become available for digital purchase/rental:

Freakier Friday

Purchase: Apple TV – R200

Rental: Apple TV – R170

When it comes to reviving beloved franchises decades after they became a hit, Hollywood doesn’t have the best record. Which is what it came as such a nice surprise when Freakier Friday turned out to be a hit earlier this year. Set 22 years after Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan’s mother and daughter pairing of Tess and Anna accidentally swapped bodies through the magic of fortune cookies (just go with it!), Freakier Friday finds Anna now with a daughter of her own, Harper, and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily, and stuck with trying to manage the complexities of merging families. When Tess, Harper, and Lily all attend Anna’s bachelorette party and some mystical hijinks happen, the foursome wake up the next morning to find that body swap lightning has struck twice! For all four of them! As Sam mentioned in his 8/10 review, “Raising a Noughties comedy back from the dead, and perking it up with highlights and some lip plumper, Freakier Friday delivers on the fine-tuned fun perfected by its predecessor. Even though you can predict the landing of every punchline way in advance.”
