The past two weeks have been pretty busy on the pop culture news front. So much so, that to keep this recap nice and digestible, we’ve stuck to the biggest stories that stood out for us.

Before jumping in, though, there is one passing we need to mention, and that’s the shock death of actress Catherine O’Hara aged 71, following “a brief illness.” The two-time Emmy winner and one-time Golden Globe winner was known for her comedic work, with signature roles in Home Alone, the Beetlejuice movies and Schitt’s Creek. O’Hara’s most recent on-screen appearance was in Season 2 of The Last of Us.

Film

During the early hours of this morning, the NFL Super Bowl 2026 took place. For non sportsball fans, that means three things – overpriced gimmicky commercials, an epic half-time show, and trailer spots for upcoming blockbuster releases. This year, the latter included Supergirl, The Mandalorian and Grogu, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a better look at Spielberg’s UFO thriller Disclosure Day, and one final trailer for Project Hail Mary. You can watch all of this year’s Super Bowl trailers here.

All this said, arguably the biggest trailer drop of the past fortnight was for twenty-years-later sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2. Racking up over 11 million views in under a week, the comedy drama reunites original stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci with director David Frankel, and brings back screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna as well.

Plotwise, the film returns to the offices of iconic New York City fashion magazine Runway, but sees the characters, especially Streep’s Miranda Priestly, trying to navigate a drastically changed, struggling media landscape.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 comes to cinemas on 1 May.

We may now have our first look at The Beatles, as played by Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), Paul Mescal (Paul McCartney), Joseph Quinn (George Harrison) and Barry Keoghan (Ringo Starr), but that four-film musical biopic from Sam Mendes is still two years away. Right now, anticipation is mounting for Michael – centred on King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The new official trailer delves more into what viewers can expect from the film, directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua. Don’t expect any deep critical probing, but do expect a lot of style and fantastic music! Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, plays the icon at the start of his solo career, when he took a bold step to break away from the Jackson 5 and make the music he wanted. Michael comes to cinemas starting 24 April.

Finally in the movie section, here’s your first look at Henry Cavill as immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod in the loooooooong awaited Highlander reboot. You can probably expect this one out next year.

Comic Con Cape Town 2026 made its second big international guest announcement – following news that veteran anime voice actor Christopher Sabat will be appearing – and it’s the return to South African shores of cosplayer Yaya Han. Han is one of the biggest names in the profession, crossing over to mainstream recognition with her own branded fabric line and sewing machine. As some extra trivia, Han was one of the cosplay guests at the very first Comic Con Africa, back in 2018. She will be at CCCT 2026 on all four days of the con, 30 April to 3 May.

Series

What do you do if your adolescent cast has aged far beyond their characters? You make an animated show instead apparently.

Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers had always said that they’re not done with the universe of their sci-fi horror hit, despite completing the primary storyline. Upcoming spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 seems to be delivering on that promise. From animation studio Flying Bark Productions, Tales from ’85 is set between the events of the second and third seasons of the live-action Stranger Things, and sees Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, and Max face new paranormal threats to Hawkins during the winter of 1985. The series is modelled after a Saturday morning cartoon, and features an all-new voice cast for the characters.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is scheduled to premiere on 23 April on Netflix.

Returning in a more traditional sense is Disney+ and Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox is once more back as blind defence attorney Matt Murdock, who protects the streets of Hell’s Kitchen as costumed vigilante Daredevil. Notably joining him this time in his struggle against crime lord turned despotic New York City mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is super powered detective, and former Defenders ally, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter).

The eight-episode Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again premieres on 24 March.

On the brand-new series front, come 4 March, Prime Video subscribers will be able to watch Young Sherlock, an action-packed origin story for the iconic British detective. Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays the title character as an impulsive 19-year-old Oxford student who finds himself embroiled in a global conspiracy in the 1870s.

The cast of Young Sherlock includes Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes, Sherlock and Mycroft’s adventurous father; Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes, Sherlock and Mycroft’s artistic mother; Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother; and Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge. Guy Ritchie, who made the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock movies, executive produces and directs the series – which is, for the record, based on Andrew Lane’s book series.

Want to see the first on-set pics of Sophie Turner as aristocratic adventurer Lara Croft in Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series. Here you go (with video here). The costuming looks good but Turner simply looks very Turner, right down to a much lighter hair shade than the brunette video game character she is playing.

In semi-related news, actress Keeley Hawes was also spotted on set recently. Hawes, who voiced Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Anniversary, Legend and Underworld, spin-off Lara Croft games, and some other tie-in media, is rumoured to be cameoing as Lara’s long-vanished mother Amelia.

Now for some miscellaneous TV news.

Gaming

It’s Blizzard’s 35th anniversary year, and with it the studio is driving a “next chapter” message. A 30th anniversary Diablo presentation is being streamed tomorrow, 11 February, but already change has come to Overwatch, the pioneering MMO hero shooter that is now a decade old, and has largely fallen out of favour in recent years – losing its popularity crown to Marvel Rivals among other similar games.

Ditching the 2 in its name, the new Overwatch starts a year-long event on 10 February that will include 10 new heroes, and immediately introduces five new additions (Jet Pack Cat, Anran, Domina, Emre, and Mizuki) to the roster. You can see them in action here, and read all about plans for the new narrative-driven era of Overwatch here.

Meanwhile, over the PlayStation corner of the gaming industry, developer Guerilla revealed its next project set in the unique post-apocalyptic universe of Horizon. If you were excited for Aloy’s next world-saving endeavour, temper that excitement now.

Looking like Monster Hunter with Horizon flavour, Horizon Hunters Gathering is a three-player co-op actioner where you select a Hunter from an available roster of quirky characters and set out to slay dangerous machines. You’ll do that on repeat, with runs earning perks and rewards to invest in improving your Hunter, and tweaking them to your play style. This is done during your downtime between missions at the social hub. Notably, the game features a different, more stylised art style from the main Horizon series.

Horizon Hunters Gathering is coming eventually to PS5 and PC, with early playtests starting this month.

Finally, that Life is Strange event tease a few weeks back delivered on the rumours. Fan-favourite character, blue-haired rebel Chloe Price is appearing in the next game in this choice-driven narrative series – reuniting her with childhood best friend Max Caulfield, at Caledon University.

Made by Deck Nine Games, who previous made such LiS titles as Before the Storm, True Colours and 2024’s Double Exposure, Life is Strange: Reunion sees Max and Chloe forced to work together to change the future, with Max’s time rewind powers meaning she knows they have just three days before a deadly inferno potentially destroys the campus.

Life is Strange: Reunion comes to PS5, xbox Series consoles and PC on 26 March.
