We’re doing things a little differently today. With the 2026 edition of the Oscars (AKA the 98th Academy Awards) taking place last night – AKA very early this morning for people in African and European time zones – we’re focusing solely on the American film industry’s most prestigious accolades.

The TLDNR version is that there were no real surprises, as results mirrored those of other ceremonies during awards season.

  • Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark comedic actioner One Battle After Another emerged with the most Oscars, winning 6, including Best Picture and Director.
  • Ryan Coogler’s period vampire tale Sinners won 4 awards, with Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan among them.
  • Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, for Netflix, dominated on the production front, earning 3 accolades (for Production Design, Costuming and Make-up and Hairstyling).
  • And KPop Demon Hunters took home 2 Oscars – for Best Song (Golden) and Best Animated Feature.

While there were no real surprises, this year’s Oscars did make history in a few categories.

  • Jessie Buckley became the first Irish performer to win Best Actress – for her work in Hamnet.
  • Sinners’ Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman ever to win an Oscar for Cinematography. She is also a woman of colour.
  • With Golden, by EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seo and Teddy Park, this is the first time a Kpop track has scooped Best Song. As a side note, music started playing over EJAE’s acceptance speech, prompting boos from the audience.
  • The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva tied for Best Live Action Short Film. There have previously only been five ties in Oscar history, in any category.
  • In a brand new category, Best Casting, Cassandra Kulukundis won for One Battle After Another.
