Two crowd-pleasers screening in wide release. Three specialist offerings available at limited locations. That’s what South Africans can look forward to at cinemas from this Friday.
Before we outline the week’s new mainstream movies below, these are the more niche debuts: Bollywood comedy whodunnit Housefull 5 (also book here); 1970s-set documentary One to One: John & Yoko; and the Throwback rerelease of 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn.
Often with “From the World of John Wick” bolted into the title, action thriller Ballerina is just that. Taking place around the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), an assassin trained in the ways of the Ruska Roma, and out for revenge following her father’s killing. Also starring are Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, and the veteran franchise faces of Ian McShane, Lance Reddick and Keanu Reeves. Directed by Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard’s Len Wiseman.
If you’re more in the mood for an uplifting emotional experience than slick action, you’ll want to secure your ticket for The Life of Chuck. This genre-spanning drama touches on fantasy, adventure, science fiction, musical and romance as it explores the life, in non-chronological order, of ordinary man Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). If you’re still not sold, know that The Life of Chuck is based on a Stephen King novella, with Mike Flanagan (a King adaptation veteran) behind the camera. Oh, and the all-star cast includes the likes of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, Jacob Tremblay and Nick Offerman.
