Three new movies debut in South African cinemas today, ensuring film fans have a new, and diverse, selection of thrills to choose from. In addition, a trip to the cinema may also expose you to the Disney Junior Cinema Club, an hour-long interactive cinema experience for pre-school children and their families (happening every weekend in September); Bollywood action thriller Baaghi 4; and the Throwback return of romantic tearjerker The Notebook.
Maybe it’s a relatively quiet week because few movies want to open against The Conjuring: Last Rites, the fourth film in the massively popular supernatural horror franchise. Last Rites promises to end the saga of real-life husband-and-wife paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), as the pair tackle their last case in 1986. Except, this time things are different, and disturbingly personal.
Thanks to Warner Bros. SA and Sun Africa Group, we have an exclusive clip to get you in the right unnerved headspace for The Conjuring: Last Rites. Catch it in conventional cinemas and on large format screens.
It’s been literal decades in the making but sword and sorcery heroine Red Sonja finally returns to the big screen in this fantasy action adventure… which comes with trashy low budget stylings. Drawing heavily on the Dynamite Comics interpretation of Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian huntress, Red Sonja sees the chainmail-bikini-clad title character (Matilda Lutz) unite an unlikely group of warriors to face tyrant Dragan The Magnificent (Robert Sheehan) and his bride, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day).
Inspired by real-life events, action drama Stolen Girl centres on Kate Beckinsale’s determined mother Maureen, who finds herself living a nightmare when her ex-husband abducts their young daughter and flees to the Middle East. Desperate to bring her child home, Maureen teams up with Robeson (Scott Eastwood), a morally slippery ex-marine and child abduction specialist, but the help comes with a heavy price, and a whole new set of dangers.
