You know how many movies have the courage to open against Jurassic World Rebirth? Almost nothing in the case of South African cinemas. There’s Bollywood ensemble romance Metro… In Dino at select Nu Metros. And on the Ster Kinekor Throwback side, Daniel Day Lewis’s oilfield drama There Will Be Blood and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle make a brief re-release return, but that’s it.

By all accounts, Jurassic World Rebirth goes back to the roots of the science fiction adventure franchise i.e. it’s about humans trying to survive amidst prehistoric predators, on their turf. This means a harder lean into thriller territory.

As for the plot, Rebirth is set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, and sees skilled covert operative Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) recruited by Rupert Friend’s Big Pharma representative to lead an extraction mission to an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park. Bennett is paired with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), plus veteran team lead Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), to retrieve genetic material that has the potential for major human medical advances. The catch? The dinosaurs on this island were considered too dangerous to ever expose to park guests.

Dino fans are in good hands with Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One, The Creator and Monsters, in the director’s seat.

Look out for Rebirth in 2D, 3D and on select large format screens.
