A long holiday weekend means more time for movie watching. If you’re planning on treating yourself to a cinema visit in South Africa over the next few days, you have four new feature releases to choose from, which you can learn more about below.
On the “specialist” front, wacky animated animal adventure Madagascar is this period’s Throwback release, along with epic Lawrence of Arabia (just at Rosebank Nouveu). Meanwhile, 1972 concert film Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII, returns to IMAX in remastered form from next Thursday at select cinemas.
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler reteams with his Fruitvale Station, Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan for highly anticipated period horror film Sinners. Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, having seen action in World War I and under the command of Prohibition gangsters, twin brothers return to their hometown in Mississippi in 1932 to start again. There they discover an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. Also with Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell and Wunmi Mosaku.
If you’re looking for something a little more Faith-based for the Easter weekend, there’s animated The King of Kings, brought to audiences by Angel Studios. Inspired by children’s book The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens, the film sees Dickens (Kenneth Branagh) share the story of Jesus Christ with his son, Walter. Through the power of imagination, Walter walks alongside Christ, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His sacrifice. The voice cast also includes Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley.
Action comedy Old Guy stars Christoph Waltz as ageing contract killer Danny Dolinski. Removed from the field by his bosses due to his advancing arthritis, Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back into the field, but it’s only to train Gen Z prodigy assassin Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman). They may be mismatched, but they make an effective pairing. However, they soon realise their assignment is removing the old guard in a full takeover. Also with Lucy Liu, while Con Air and The Expendable 2’s Simon West is behind the camera.
Promotion material is everywhere right now for animated adventure Sneaks. Following a sneakerhead gathering in New York City, a pair of one-of-a-kind sneakers, Ty (Anthony Mackie), and Maxine (Chloe Bailey), are stolen by ‘the Collector’ (Laurence Fishburne). However, Ty ends up separated from his sister, and, alone in the Big City, must team up with scuffed, streetwise JB (Martin Lawrence), to rescue his sister and return to his rightful owner. The film features music by Grammy-winning producer Mustard.
