British sports drama and biopic Giant looks at the real-life rags to riches story of Prince Naseem “Naz” Hamed (Amir El-Masry), who worked with trainer Brendan Ingle (Pierce Brosnan) to rise from the tough streets of Sheffield to the status of world champion, and one of the greatest showmen the boxing world has ever seen. This against the backdrop of Islamaphobic Britain of the 1980s and 90s.
Look out for our review of Giant soon.
For something completely different, there’s musical drama The Testament of Ann Lee, based on real-life events. Amanda Seyfried plays the title figure, a woman who founded the Shakers religious sect – a group of Christians known for their ecstatic worship through song and dance – in the 18th century. But with her followers proclaiming her a female Christ, and the group’s radical ideas, Lee attracted violent retaliation.
Expect this one to come to Disney+ in the coming months.
