This weekend at the movies it’s all about heroes in blue, with a touch of red. But apart for the family-friendly face-off of Superman vs. Smurfs, you can also catch Bollywood romance Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, crime actioner Maalik, and the dual Throwback rereleases (at select Ster Kinekors) of My Fair Lady and Madagascar: Back 2 Africa.

Look up in the sky! Superman is back on the big screen with a fresh revival that kicks off the new DC Universe. The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn is the filmmaker responsible for this star- and character-packed adventure for the Man of Steel, which was initially titled Superman: Legacy as it deals with Clark Kent/Kal-El (David Corenswet) trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Rachel Brosnahan plays reporter Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult is Supes’s brilliant nemesis Lex Luthor. Superman is screening in 2D, 3D and on large format screens.

Look out for our Superman review soon.

Also enjoying a big screen revival from this Friday are the Smurfs. In animated musical comedy Smurfs, Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) is kidnapped by evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel, and hauled off to the real world. It’s up to the Smurfs, led by Smurfette (Rihanna), to save him, and in the process make new friends and discover their heroic place in the universe. The rest of the star-packed voice cast includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham. For some extra animation pedigree, Smurfs is directed by Shrek the Third and Puss and Boots’s Chris Miller.
